“Newtons Law” Of Snacking!

newtons 7

It seems a little silly that I am writing a post about “Fig Newtons” today, especially when I just posted about My Mom’s Amazing Sour Cream Cookies yesterday. But when I was given the opportunity to try and review some of Newtons new products, I just couldn’t help myself! I have been a fan of “Fig Newtons” ever since I married the hubster many moons ago!

Growing up we never had “sugar cereal” in our house, let alone pre-packaged cookies, but when I got married and found out the hubster’s favorite store-bought cookies were Fig Newtons…I became a fan too. :-)

But the “Fig Newtons” of 25 years ago have come a long way! They, of course, still have the “Original Fig” that started it all…..

…..and now they also have SO many more delicious options! My FAVORITE are Triple Berry Grab and Go Newtons…but the Baked Apple and Cinnamon Newtons are a VERY close second.

Despite being delicious I personally am a fan because they are a snacker’s dream! I’ve shared before that I would rather snack my way through a day than have 3 big meals. That’s just the way my body feels the best.

Of course when I say “snacks” I’m not referring to “junk food”…I really try to make them healthy snacks and so Newtons fit right in with my eating style. Especially when you factor in my crazy, busy schedule!

road trip

I find it rather ironic that now that I “work from home” full-time on this blog, I’m hardly ever AT home! :-) I feel like I’m always either driving in my car or out of town at a conference, and as you know, neither of those are very conducive to eating healthy!

That’s why I have some sort of healthy snack in my purse at all times! I actually get panicky when I realize I DON’T have anything! Whether it’s roasted almonds, my “highly addicting granola“, or a package of Newtons, it’s a very comforting feeling to know I’m covered in the snack department.

When this box of Newtons arrived with a couple of their new products, the Cherry Vanilla Fruit Thins, the Baked Apple & Cinnamon Newtons, and the Triple Berry Newtons, first I ATE some, and then I quickly squirreled some away in my purse for future enjoyment. :-)

The Triple Berry Newtons were delicious but familiar since they are basically just a larger version of a traditional fig newton. Their size makes them perfect for snack time. The Cherry Vanilla Fruit Thins were completely new to me and to be honest I didn’t think I would like them because I’m such a fan of the original soft, chewy Newtons. But I was actually quite surprised at how much I enjoyed nibbling on these. They had the exact same taste/flavor of the soft cookies, but the crunch of a shortbread cookie, which I’m also quite fond of! If you like your cookies with a light crunch…you will love these.

If you’re a “snacker” like me, I highly recommend trying some of Newtons new products, or rediscovering some of the old favorites!

Want to know something kind of funny? When I started writing this post I was driving (well, the hubster was driving) to Green River, Wyoming to visit my sister, snacking on a Grab & Go bar. I just looked at the clock and it is 1:47 am (almost 12 hours later) and I am just finishing up this post…and guess what? Yep, I am snacking on another Newton. I know I shouldn’t even be eating this late/early…but at least they only have 140 calories per serving. I told you I was a snacker! :-)

Do they still make the raspberry Newtons?!? I LOVED those way back when I was in high school, but I haven’t seen them in years. The triple berry is similar, but the cookie/doughy part is very crumbly, and the flavor pulls more strawberry (to me, anyway).

Yes, It would be great to have a gluten free version so my family can enjoy them again!! One of the 2 packaged cookies I enjoyed growing up. The other was Lorna Doone’s. The fruit thins sound like a combination of those two.
I also find that the link does not work.

Oh how I LOVE newtons!!! They remind me so much of my childhood. We seemed to always have a package in the house…LOL. The fig ones are my fave! They remind me of my grandpa. He used to lift us grandkids up into the tree to play like monkeys and snack on what we could reach…much to our parents horror that is…to many figs=not such a good thing LOL He just couldn’t tell us no…he was the best!

I agree that there need to be a GLUTEN-FREE Fig Newtons. I even wrote to Paul Newman’s company to provide that years ago to no avail. If you know of a recipe of Gluten-Free, sugar-free, soy-free recipe, please do share! :)

When I saw the topic today I was intrigued What has the Fig Newton Become Now. As I read your blog I have a half eaten package of fig newtons sitting on the table next to me which I will eat as soon as I am done writing this. I’ve tried the new flavors that came out years ago but I always return to the fig which is my favorite cookie ever. I do have to admit the newton thins are a catching up especially the blueberry, I’m a berry freak. I can’t wait to try the triple berry and the cherry vanilla thins. So now I’m going to finish my fig newtons, thanks again.

Nice post. Just wondering, how do these products compare (calories/sugars/whole grains) to their healthy style rivals? Love the Newton’s. We’ve had the other Newton favorites when the kids were growing up– but we all preferred the Fig. The fruit thins sound good; I am a cookie fanatic and if it is a healthier-ish version that would be a good thing.
Also I wish Nabisco (or anyone) made a hard container to stash the Newtons in to avoid being crushed–as much as I love Fig Newtons I hate crushed Fig Newtons.

I LOVE Fig Newtons sooo much. Ever since I was a little girl (many MANY moons ago!) I just wish they would make them WITHOUT high fructose corn syrup. I am really trying to avoid that ingredient altogether. Maybe if we all wrote to them, asking them to use real, normal sugar instead….or better yet, honey….maybe they would listen to us! Just a thought. I love you FN! And Jillee, thank you so much for your “One Good Thing…” – I so enjoy reading it every day!

Sorry , for the first time I feel like you just posted an Add. I don,t like seeing you advertising some product. It’s the first time I have been disappointed in your blog. Sorry you let me down this time.

I, too, was disappointed with this post. I felt that I was reading an advertisement for one of the worst snacks out there! Not junk food?? – Hardly!!
From these snacks you consume two forms of corn syrup, partially hydrogenated oils, whey (likely the powdered, terrible for your version), and soy (AND red dye in some flavors). Yikes!! Stick to whole foods — your body with thank you!

This is such a disapointing post. I understand having advertising links to pay the bills like most wedsites have, but really this is too much! Fig Newton are processed food garbage. I understand indulging in crap food now and then but call is like it is, one BAD thing.

I love Fig Newtons :) Original, strawberry, whatever! I have tried the Fruit Thins, and they were just ‘ok’. Rather would have the whole grain or reduced fat Fig Newtons.

And these are not something that I think I could make easily and I’m a pretty darn good baker, so I don’t mind the product placement :)

Ive always loved the texture of Newtons, but the fig flavor has never been a favorite and thats all I could find growing up. Have learned to love the new fruity flavors. Got the blueberry fruit thins once and they were so packed with flavor my mouth exploded :D

Jillee, it’s YOUR post. What you include in YOUR post is YOUR business. With all the unhappiness going on in the world today I certainly wish those who do not approve of the content would simply leave the page and get on with their day. Hmmm, now I feel better! lol On a POSITIVE note, my daughter brought some of her white blouses to me the other day wanting to know if I could do anything to get the under arm stains out. I tried your baking soda, peroxide mixture (didn’t have any Dawn, so I used Palmolive Oxy) and hoped for the best. I now have a very happy daughter with some pretty white shirts! Thanks so much for sharing what YOU want to share with us!

I agree. But generally (good) bloggers (like Jillee) will acknowledge constructive criticism, and potentially address any issues that are raised. No one is blasting expletives about what a terrible post this is, they are expressing their dislike as a reader to hype a product (particularly one that isn’t very good for you).

I make the laundry detergent, and homemade “clorox” wipes, and I’m sure a thing or two else. Fig Newtons aren’t, in fact, that much better than soda & chips (they probably have more in common than one would think).

She is not the only blogger in town. I think, in comparison, it is rather clear, that she got it for free from the company and that the whole thing was meant as advertisement. I think it is also rather clear, that many of her giveaways are given to her for free by companies who are using her as advertisement platform. Of course it is her right to blog about whatever she likes, but it is also the right of the readers to give her feed-back. Not only a right, feed-back is usually a welcome thing to anyone who wants to make money from the public. And please don’t tell me now that she is not trying that. Or using her readers to vote for her so she can get more publicity (and money) or to buy whatever she decides to sell in the future. You may decide to live in your perfect, happy world fantasy, but others prefer to see things realistic. She isn’t writing this blog solely to make you happy, she is doing it because it is her job. She is making money from it. Some readers would like it to be less obvious, I guess.

Jill, I love reading your posts everyday! I’m wondering when we’ll see Jill’s version of the Fruit Thins! Yes Please! I think I might actually go buy some of these tonight. And yes while I understand that they are not some peoples version of healthy, they are certainly better than a soda and chips! I try to live somewhere closer to “crazy girl who makes her own everything!” while still allowing a little of the “crazy girl who brings home take-out everynight!” Have a wonderful day!!!

I thought you have to eat gluten-free. How can you eat such when it contains wheat flour?
It is nice for you that you get so many free products sent to review them, but i can barely believe you are really eating those.

I also have to add that it is a “silly” thing to call comments saying this sounds like an add are “silly”. I really dislike people who have no other arguments going for them than calling other people silly, if they disagree with them. Everyone has a right to state their opinion without being called silly for it. The argument “you are silly if you don’t share my opinion” is exactly what i would see as a sign of lesser intelligence. Even being a fan and defending who you admire, people should come up with real arguments.
And no, 12gr of sugar per 2 cookies is not exactly a healthy snack, especially when most of it is from processed fructose. You also have to think of that you are supposed to eat a maximum of 50gr of sugar per day! I will not even start on the wheat and the hydrogenated oil part. Even the linked article calls this a farely healthy snack, a nicer phrase for actually junk food with fiber.

I have since found you saying in another post, that it is your son, who is celiac, not you. That was a misunderstanding on my part. I have also realised, that you are not really interested in “healthy” food, but more in fast and easy things to do as a good housewife, passing on ideas you found on internet on your blog. I do like some of the things i found here. It is a rather versatile collection of ideas. Thanks!

From time to time I will do a “sponsored” post on this blog, and it will say so, as it does, right there at the top of the post. Whether you like it or not, or agree with it or not, it’s one of the prices of being able to do this blog “full-time”.

I feel some of the comments about me becoming “all about advertising” are very unfair considering the VAST amount of material on this blog that is completely devoid of any commercial content. To date I have done 653 posts on this blog and only a very small percentage of those are sponsored.

If you are offended by blogs with advertisements that help them make a living…then you might be more comfortable at another one. I would hate to lose you as a reader, but I don’t begrudge ANYONE trying to find what works best for them.
