Do I Need To Wash This? Some Professional Laundry Tips

washing guidelines

Common sense dictates, to me at least, that if you need to ask the above question, then the answer is probably YES! :-) But, that’s not necessarily ALWAYS the case. And to be quite honest, I don’t think this stuff is all that intuitive. For example, when I was a newlywed, I didn’t have a clue how often I should wash the bedding. Every week? Every month? (Turns out I was at least in the ballpark!)

So when I ran across this list on The American Cleaning Institute website, I thought it was worthwhile information and decided to share it with all of you.

Besides, it was the perfect companion post to a fun giveaway we were planning! One Good Thing By Jillee T-shirts! I know, I know…you have all been waiting, hoping, PRAYING this day would come! lol. Well, it’s finally here. You could be one of THIRTY lucky winners of a LIMITED EDITION OGT by Jillee t-shirt…courtesy of At Cost Apparel.   More at the end of this post!

American Cleaning Institute Tips On When To Wash:

washing guidelines

  • Bed sheets should be washed at least every two weeks, more often if you sweat a lot at night.

washing guidelines

  • Pajamas should be washed after 3 or 4 wears (if you shower before bed, you may get a few more wears before washing).

washing guidelines

  • Bath towels should be hung to dry between uses and washed after 3 or 4 normal uses, or more frequently if you play sports.

washing guidelines

  • Underwear and socks should be washed after each wearing.

washing guidelines

  • Bras can be worn 2-3 times before washing. Be sure to give your bra a rest day in between wearing to give the elastic a chance to regain its shape.

washing guidelines

  • T-shirts, tank tops and camisoles should be washed after each wearing.

washing guidelines

  • Outer clothes like dress shirts and kakis can be worn a few times before washing unless it is hot out and you are sweating or they are visibly dirty or stained.

washing guidelines

  • Jeans can typically be worn 3 times before washing.

washing guidelines

  • Jeggings and tights should be washed after every wear to get rid of the baggy knees.

washing guidelines

  • Typically suits can be worn several times during normal use before dry cleaning (3-4 times for wool and 4-5 times for synthetics). Depending on your lifestyle or environment you may need to dry clean more often. Smoky bars, smog or smelly environments or if your suit gets stained may mean that you need to clean them more often.

washing guidelines

  • Bathing suits should be washed after every wear.

washing guidelines

  • Exceptions to the rules: whites and silks are prone to discoloration and should be cleaned after every wear.

BONUS TIP:  If your clothes get stained, wash, spot clean or dry clean as soon as possible – this will greatly extend the life of the garment.

I know there will be many who will have slightly (or VASTLY) different takes on the above guidelines…but I would just like to point out….they are GUIDELINES!  You can take them or leave them, or come up with your own variation of them. It’s all just information sharing designed to help you make your own educated laundry decisions.

My favorite t-shirt is one I got while working at a country store (general store), think old timey, sitting on the porch, chatting with the locals…

The owner created these t-shirts to sell, my favorite one said “If it’s tourist season, why can’t we shoot ’em?” It had a picture of the cast of Beverly Hillbillies with granny holding her 2-eye shotgun.

My favorite t shirt is one that was my son’s when he was younger. He was cleaning out his draws and had a pile of clothes to get rid of. I went thru the pile and pick one of his shirts. I still wear this t shirt today and it has been 15 years. Linda

    • Darlene Moss says

I have a black Georgia Bulldog t-shirt that I favor. The black goes with most & the shirt is comfortable. I wear lots of
t-shirts because of the comfort factor.

  2. Wendi Ezzes says

My favorite tshirt is so worn out n i don’t have a photo. My kids, who are now 17 and 15, did handprints on a tshirt for my beloved husband for a fathers day 15 years ago!
Their cute lil hands were so sweet and my husband still cherishes it to this day. If i tried to get them to do one now they would baulk at me…just like they are giving me the stink eye right now as I share this precious moment with y’all!!

    • Gwyn says

The good news Wendi is that it will change. My son at 15 and 17 would have been giving me the stink eye too, the only way I could get him to allow me to keep outgrown clothing was to hand them down to younger relatives (or sneak them into a bin when he wasn’t around of course). As he got a bit bigger he did go through a phase of handing down t-shirts to me…but back to my point. Now going on 21, when he came across a couple articles of baby and toddler clothing recently that he knew might be especially sentimental to me (a particular t-shirt comes to mind) he actually brought them to me and said I didn’t think you would want me to get rid of this. He did the same with some art projects and other items like that. So just wanted to let you know that as the get a bit older they start to at least accept and acknowledge our sentimentality and maybe even (dare I say) understand and start to share it a bit.

My favorite Tee-shirt is a very old Tye-dye ” Moody Blues” Shirt I have had for years that I got used from my husbands best friend. Or maybe I took it either way it has been mine for a very long time.

  4. Marissa says

Hi! My favorite T-Shirt is my Relay-For-Life T-shirt that I get each year after the relay. It’s comfy, and promotes a good cause!! :)

  5. Beth says

My favorite T Shirt is any T Shirt with our beloved Green Bay Packers proudly displayed on it!
And we have MANY of them!

  6. Cindy K says

My new fave tshirt is my Señor Frogs from Nassau, Bahamas because of the cruise my husband took me on for my 40th bday!

  7. Jamie Lynn says

my favorite t-shirt is one that is probably now almost 20 years old!! my late mom bought it for me when i was probably about 13, it was my first New York Yankees t-shirt that has a screenprinted graphic of the clubhouse on it. it happened to have my favorite player’s jersey hanging in one of the lockers (Wade Boggs, #12) but i don’t think she even realized it when she bought it. it’s super worn out and i haven’t actually worn it in probably 10 years but i can’t bear to throw it away. eventually i think i’d like to cut out the graphic and frame it, but for now it’s folded up in my closet.

  8. Laurie says

My favorite shirt is any of my plain colored v-neck T’s. Honestly I own maybe a dozen now. For a while I loved shirts from I had of 42 of them but I have since dwindled my collection to 10.

  9. Aven Tirrel says

My favorite t-shirt is an old worn out Old Navy t-shirt. it’s grey and i’ve had it forever but its so comfy!
