How To Give A Room A Color Makeover Pt. 2 – The Big Reveal! Plus A Sherwin-Williams Giveaway!

after color makeover What a difference a day AND a coat of paint can make! A little over two weeks ago, I told you a little bit about the basement apartment my son and daughter-in-law live in that needed a little home decor love. It was especially in need of a shot of COLOR to breathe some life into a very WHITE space.

With the help of the Sherwin-Williams ColorSnap® mobile app, Kaitlyn and Erik were able to find “the perfect yellow” they were hoping for to bring some “sunshine” into their sterile kitchen/dining area.

So, once again I will hand it over to Kaitlyn, so she can give you the 4-1-1 on all the fantastic ideas she came up with to complement her Sherwin-Williams Color Makeover!

I am so, so thrilled with how this room turned out! I think it proves that you don’t have to spend a ton of money to make a big impact. We didn’t have the budget for new appliances or cabinets – and even if we did have the money I probably wouldn’t have wanted to spend it since we are just renting from Jillee and the hubster ;)

So we used paint, furniture and accessories to create a whole new look for the room. I focused the bulk of our budget on things that we can take with us when we eventually move.

I think the paint color made the biggest difference in this makeover. The exact same furniture and accessories would have looked just blah next to white walls. After painting the walls in Sherwin-Williams Emerald™ Interior Acrylic Latex Paint in “Friendly Yellow,” we added a nice tall baseboard painted in Sherwin-Williams Emerald Interior Acrylic Latex Paint in “Pure White,” and used that same color on the doors and trim. Then we switched out the old cabinet handles and door knobs for some pretty new silver ones.

Next came the furniture. Our yellow table didn’t quite go with the new yellow walls – I LOVE yellow but that was just a little too much yellow even for me ;) I found the table used a couple of years ago on our local version of craigslist. It’s a great solid wood with really good bones and I just couldn’t bear to part with it. So, after perusing Pinterest, I decided I wanted to redo the table in a nice dark stain.

Now the most refinishing I’ve ever done is a couple of table lamps and some picture frames, so I turned to my husband’s cousin’s wife (is that confusing enough for you?), Ashley, who happens to be a total pro at refinishing furniture. She whipped that table into shape and it looks just gorgeous!

The chairs we had were in terrible shape, and one of them had a big crack down the middle of the seat. So I found some used light brown Ikea chairs that Ashley painted white for us. I found the cute seat covers at World Market.

Then we picked up an Ikea Expedit shelf to add some interest to that long wall and give us more storage.

Next came the accessories. I decided to stick to a color scheme of yellow, teal/turquoise, and red. I found these cute curtains at Pier 1 that just happened to have all of those colors in them – I think they really tie the room together.

Then I added a great mirror, a turquoise lamp, a bright red lantern, baskets, and cute prints of all the states my husband and I have lived in (made by Jenna of smallfryblog.com).

In the kitchen area, I added some greenery above the sink, and one of my favorites quotes above the oven. We already had the red rugs, everything on the counters, the dishes displayed on the Expedit, and the iPod dock. I really could not be happier with this whole makeover.

Sometimes I feel a little bit frivolous or superficial when I spend money and time decorating my home – especially since we are renters. But, this room is a testament to me that beautiful and functional design can make such a difference in your mood! I honestly used to get depressed walking into the kitchen! Now I can’t wait to spend time there with family and friends cooking and enjoying time together. I already feel more motivated to cook dinner every night – which I’m sure my husband will be thrilled about ;)

I don’t think Erik and Kaitlyn are the ONLY ones happy about their new kitchen/dining room color makeover…Milo the Boxer seems to be pretty happy with the results as well. :-)

Thank you Kaitlyn! It has been so much fun seeing the transformation of the “White Room”. :-)  Good job!!

I would most want to make over my kitchen. The walls are this ugly gold-brown color that came with the place, and it makes the room so dark despite the fact that there is lots of natural light coming in.

I live in a white, white, white apartment where they did “touch up” in a different shade of shinier white! They say I can repaint, and boy would I love to do the living room and rid myself of those spots!

pick a room, any room!! every single room in my house is wood paneling from the 50′s and 60′s. the best part (read: sarcasm) is each room (and the hallway) has different types and colors of paneling! the kitchen cabinets are made from the same paneling as the walls so it’s really dark and sad looking in there. can you say uggggg-lyyyyy!!! even the bathroom had birch paneling on the cabinets next to the shower until i got so sick of it that i ripped it off and rebuilt the doors out of mdf. my house is only about 750 square feet so i’d bet i could probably paint almost everything with that Sherwin Williams gift card!! your son and daughter in law’s apartment looks fantastic, they did a great job! can’t even imagine replacing those kitchen cabinets, they’re gorgeous, but if they ever did they could send ‘em my way! :)

How did you make the state pictures? I think that is a great idea, except for my husband I would do the countries he has lived in. The whole post gave some great ideas. Thank You.

Hi Sally! The state prints were actually made by Jenna from the Small Fry blog (smallfryblog.com). I think she actually has some country prints as well. They aren’t posted on the blog but if you email Jenna she might be willing to send you the files.

I love the kitchen/dining room make over! I would desperately love to redo my kitchen. It has the same hideous wallpaper that was there when we bought the house in ’01. It is a wonderful space and I LOVE to cook but I despise the room. Help me please.

My bedroom is in much need of a makeover! Plain white walls, old framed pictures (that I really want to hang somewhere else) make the room not all that I want it to be.

All the rooms. Bought a fixer-upper and removed all the drywall. The only room painted so far is the bathroom, four rooms and hallway still to do.

As a woman who has only one white wall in her current home (one side of the stairway to the basement), and who hasn’t had any other white walls in more than 30 years, I always read “color makeover” stories when I happen upon them. But with my own preference for SERIOUS color (deep coral walls and substantial, black crown molding in the L/R, for example), Isaw the initial before and after photos and screamed “Foul!” in my head. “White to slightly less-white isn’t a color makeover, dammit!”

But when I scrolled on thorough the close-ups, I changed my mind. All those little details can get very lost in photos, but when you’re sitting in the room and something at every viewpoint charms you in some way, it’s a very good place to be. Nice job, Kaitlyn.

I love Sherwin Williams Paints and shop there a lot. If I were to win this giveaway, I would repaint our hallways, and exercise room. They could use a new color.

The room I’d most like to re-design is my bedroom, it’s such a sad boring and style-less white. I would love to add a bold color to the walls and give myself a fun grown up bedroom, finally!

I would live to paint my kitchen. It has no windows, as it is in the back of the house, that is built into a hill. No windows. I have dark cabinets that are begging for a makeover. The kitchen is my favorite spot, but I shouldn’t get sleepy or depressed when I’m cooking!!

My living or my office, both need some TLC. My living room because it’s too cluttered (too much furniture) and dark) or my office because it’s not efficient and the sunlight seems to fade everything.

Probably my breezeway… it’s the first thing people see… and EVERYONE touches it. So it would be great to get a great, pretty, bright, SCRUBBABLE paint in there :)

I am working my way through the house – but the guest room is next on the list! The 25yo is moving out (hence the “guest room”), and his room needs a new look!

I would LOVE to make over our Master Bedroom! It has ugly green carpet with light brown walls…the same way it looked when we bought the house. We want to have fun with color and make it over with a Beach Theme. Your son and daughter in law’s apartment is BEAUTIFUL!!! Love the crisp white “beachy” look!

I LOVE to paint! I would say right now my kitchen and bath are in desperate need of a makeover. Your basement looks amazing and is inspiring. Great Job.

I so need to paint my living room. It is a huge chore, and I’ve put it off. I also am struggling with the right color. Small rooms I can repaint if I decide the color is wrong. The high ceilings in this room make this space one I don’t want to risk having to re=do.

I would love to re-do my dining room. Paneling is painted, but needs a fresh coat. Room has a red brick fireplace that I would like to change. Giant table and too much furniture. Need to know how to edit. (By the way this came out on the 20th, but “rules” say contest lasts from 5/2 till 5/19. Hope I am not too late.)

What a beautiful job! I would like to make over our son’s room. He picked orange paint about 5 years ago and I think it’s time to move on.

I would truly love to re-do most of my house! We’re actually almost done renovating our master bedroom, which makes me want every other room to be as new and fresh.

If I had to pick just one room I think it would be the kitchen since I love to cook and thus spend lots of time in there.

I would love to re-do our living room. I care for my mom who is 85 and we live together. At 85 we have just moved into her “dream home” and all the walls in the whole house are white. We are doing things that are necessities but it would be a wonderful “nice-ity”surprise for her 86th birthday to create her dream living room.

So many of my rooms could use a new paint job, but the most important room would be the family room. Thats where we spend most of our time, and I want it to look pretty!

I would make over my son’s room as he just asked me to do some painting in there. Right now it is all white, no curtains and beige carpet. It needs some color!

My pick would be the living room. That is the first room you see when you walk in the front door. I have a dark wood panel in it and would love to be able to get rid of it and lighten it up. I hope I win!!! Thank you!!

I love Sherwin Williams paint! We’ve used it to make over almost every room in our house. I would love to paint my halls and mud room…it’s amazing how dingy those high-traveled spaces can get!

I’d most like to do a color make-over in what I call my ‘main room’. It’s a kitchen/dining/living room that flows together and is the main entry into the house. I’d love to use color to make it more welcoming as well as define the separate areas better.

I would do my bedroom. Hasn’t been changed in almost 13 years! Definately some color, don’t know what else, but color is needed in this white room!

I would LOVE to win and hand the card over to my 17 year old daughter to re-paint her bathroom. She’s been sharing the bath with her older brother who has moved out and has been dreaming of a “spa-like” retreat to call her own. And the bathroom really needs it too – peeling paint and the color??!! What were we thinking!! LOL! The basement apartment looks great! Thanks for sharing!

The sweepstakes says it runs through 5/19/13? I didn’t get this until 5/20/13!

Well, I guess I will answer anyway…The room I would most like to make over is my living room…That is where I spend most of my time. My house hasn’t been updated since I moved in in 1991, so pretty much ALL the rooms need a makeover!
