Don’t anyone PANIC! Father’s Day is NOT this Sunday! :-) It’s actually a WEEK from this coming Sunday…but I’m trying to get a jump on it this year, because I wanted to make something special and I knew if I let it wait until the last minute, I wouldn’t get it done! That is why you are seeing this Father’s Day gift idea almost two weeks early.
OK…now that we have that out of the way….let me tell you a little about this project! This past December I did a blog post about The Art of Shaving. I purchased some of their products to do the review, and then gave them to the hubster to try. He’s always been a “shaving cream out of a can” kind of guy, but he agreed to give them a whirl.
Much to my surprise, and his, he LOVED the shaving cream. He said he’d never had a closer shave in his life, and he’s been using it ever since. Only one problem with this stuff…it’s EXPENSIVE ($25 for 5 ounces!) So I decided to try my hand at making a homemade version using just a few all-natural ingredients I already had in my kitchen.
Homemade Shaving Cream
What You Will Need:
- 2/3 cup virgin coconut oil
- 2/3 cup shea butter
- 1/4 cup olive oil (you could also use almond, grapeseed or jojoba oil)
- 10 drops lavender essential oil
- 5 drops peppermint essential oil
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
In a small saucepan over low heat, combine the shea butter and coconut oil, stirring until just melted. Remove from the heat and add the olive oil and essential oils. Stir to mix.
Transfer to a bowl or jar and refrigerate until solid.
Remove from the refrigerator and let soften slightly. Add the 2 teaspoons of baking soda (baking soda helps remove oils which allows the razor to cut better and last longer and acts as a mild exfoliant). whip using a hand beater or a stand mixer until light and fluffy – about 2-3 minutes.
Spoon into a jar with a lid and keep in a cool, dry place.
The hubster hasn’t tried this yet since it is going to be a Father’s Day gift (shhhh….no one tell!)….so I gave it a try on my legs and not only was it great for shaving, it left my legs feeling SO soft and moisturized! I’m thinking the hubster is going to love this stuff! :-)
If your man (or you) prefer a LIGHTER shaving lubricant…I decided to try making a shave GEL as well. It’s not as thick as commercial shave gels, but it provides a nice, smooth, even coating for shaving. If you have dry skin, however, I would recommend the shave CREAM. The coconut oil makes it much more moisturizing.
Homemade Shaving Gel
What you will need:
- 1/2 cup liquid castile soap
- 1/4 cup warm water
- 1/4 cup aloe vera gel (not juice)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 Tablespoons vegetable glycerine
- 1 Tablespoon olive oil
- 8 drops tea tree essential oil (a natural anti-septic)
- 5-10 drops of your favorite essential oil / oil blend (optional) – I used Lavender
Dissolve the salt in the warm water, and then blend all remaining ingredients together. Put in a container with a lid. I put mine in a repurposed hand soap pump bottle. This would also work well in a FOAMING pump bottle.
I think any man (Father or not!) would love to receive either one of these homemade products as a gift!
