Sweet potatoes have been a part of our family’s Thanksgiving menu for as long as I can remember…and for all but a few of those years, I have refused to eat them! I don’t know why…I’ve just never been a fan. But about 5 years ago my sister-in-law Denise started bringing a sweet potato side dish to our Thanksgiving dinner that finally won me over! I’ve never asked her for the recipe but when I spied this recipe for a Sweet Potato Bake on the Marzetti KitchensSM website, I knew I had found something I might possibly like even better! Any recipe that includes Caramel Dip as one of the ingredients can’t be bad!
I did do a little tweaking of the recipe to incorporate a crunchy topping and the result was the BEST sweet potato side dish I’ve ever had.

Crunchy Pecan Topped Sweet Potato Bake
- 1 cup Marzetti® Old Fashioned Caramel Dip
- 4 Large sweet potatoes
- 4 tbsp Butter
- 1/2 tsp Salt
- Juice of 1/2 large lime (I used lemon juice)
- 1/3 cup flour
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 4 Tablespoons cold butter
- 1 cup chopped pecans
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Butter a 1 to 1 1/2 quart baking dish and set aside.
Pierce each potato with a fork several times. Place potatoes on a baking sheet and bake for about 1 hour, or until potatoes are very tender. Allow potatoes to cool slightly and peel.
Combine the warm potatoes, butter, salt, lime juice and Marzetti Caramel Dip in a large bowl and mash by hand with a potato masher or puree with an electric hand held mixer. The caramel dip is the “secret ingredient” in this dish. It provides the sweetness I love and an extra creaminess that is divine!
Spoon mixture into a prepared baking dish.
Blend topping ingredients together with a pastry cutter (or a fork) until crumbly and sprinkle on top. Bake, uncovered, 25 to 30 minutes longer or until sweet potatoes are tender and topping is lightly browned.
