It seems like everywhere I turn people are talking about “cleansing” and “detoxing.” My sister Rebecca and her daughter Jennifer are on a 21 day sugar detox and you’d think the world had come to an end! :-) A New Year seems to bring out the health-crazed side of us….not that that’s a BAD thing!
If you overindulged during the holidays (like me!) or if you simply want to start the year off in a healthy way, a detox is a great way to help your body feel its’ best!
Detox has many benefits….it improves the digestive process, increases stamina, energizes the body and much more.
Here are 7 natural & safe things you can do on a daily basis to help your body detox:
#1 Lighten up your toxin load
Reduce your intake of alcohol, coffee, cigarettes, refined sugars and saturated fats, and STRESS, all of which act as toxins in the body and are obstacles to your healing process. Also, try to minimize your use of chemical-based household cleaners and personal health care products (cleansers, shampoos, deodorants and toothpastes), and substitute natural alternatives.
Here are some alternatives from past OGT posts:
#2 Drink More Water!
You’ve heard it a thousand times before, but it’s true: you need to drink your water! Water has so many benefits for your body, including reducing headaches and migraines, boosting your immune system, and flushing out toxins. Aim to drink AT LEAST 64 ounces of water each day, and be sure to filter it first!
#3 Eat more whole foods
Foods in their natural state contain considerably more vitamins, minerals, and fiber than their processed counterparts, which are vital for keeping your body healthy. They also contain antioxidants, which protect cells against damage.
Leafy greens, such as kale, collards, broccoli and spinach, are some of the most nutrient-dense foods. The nutrients in leafy greens help to support fat burning and detoxification.
#4 Get some exercise
As you exercise you breathe deeply and take in more oxygen, which helps all the cells to perform their jobs, including removing toxins. You also work up a sweat and toxins are released through the pores of the skin. Make sure to bring plenty of water to stay hydrated!!
#5 Take a clay detox bath
Taking a therapeutic clay bath is one of the most effective methods to help assist the body in the elimination of toxins in the body. Clay baths stimulate the lymphatic system and deeply cleanse the body’s largest breathing organ – the skin. (CLICK HERE to read my post about detox baths.)
#6 Try dry skin brushing
Dry skin brushing is an easy and effective way to help detox your body. It eliminates dead cells and helps new skin to regenerate. It also stimulates blood circulation and the lymphatic system, which enhance toxin elimination.
#7 Drink a daily ACV tonic
Taking apple cider vinegar before meals aids digestion and helps the body remove toxic waste more efficiently. When foods are digested thoroughly and waste eliminated quickly, toxins are removed from the body before they have time to do damage.
Another way apple cider vinegar aids detoxification is by breaking up mucus throughout the body and cleansing the lymph nodes to allow for better lymph circulation.
