It’s been awhile since I’ve been excited about trying out a new health and beauty tip, but as soon as I heard about “dry brushing” I just knew there had to be something to it! Luckily Kaitlyn decided to look into it too and gives us the scoop on this great new technique to jump-start your beauty routine!
One of my favorite things about working on a blog full time is getting to research topics that I might not otherwise have taken the time to look into. I have learned so much since I started working with Jillee! Case-in-point, today’s topic of dry brushing. I first read about this popular spa technique about a year ago and was so intrigued I had to learn more! I jumped on Amazon and bought myself a brush and then proceeded to find out what all the excitement was about! After lots of research, I’m committed to putting it to the 30-day test! I think you will be too!
How to Dry Brush
First off, in case you’re still not sure what I’m talking about, dry brushing is simply that: brushing your skin using short strokes with a dry, natural bristle brush. Make sure to stay away from anything synthetic. You can find brushes at most health food stores and many places online.
Here is an option on Amazon. Buying a brush with a long handle makes reaching your entire body a little easier.
Generally the most convenient time to dry brush is right before a shower. Get in your birthday suit and stand in the shower without the water on. It’s called dry brushing because you don’t use any water.
Start brushing at your feet with long strokes, moving in the direction of your heart. You do not need to push very hard. Your skin should appear a bit flush but not red or irritated.
Be especially careful in sensitive areas like your stomach and breasts. Do not brush genitals, raw or inflamed skin, acne, varicose veins, patches of eczema or psoriasis. You can dry brush your face but you’ll need to buy a face specific brush.
Brushing your whole body should take about 10-20 minutes. After you finish, take a shower to rinse off dead skin cells. You can also try alternating the water temperature between hot and cold to invigorate you skin and stimulate blood circulation. After you shower moisturize with your favorite lotion or try some coconut oil.
To get the maximum benefits from dry brushing you should brush twice a day. However, you’ll want to work up to that frequency. Start with once a day or even once every other day. You may see benefits after your first dry brushing session but it generally takes 30 days to see a significant difference.
- Stimulates the lymphatic system, helping to speed up the process of eliminating waste from the body. Many naturopathic physicians use dry brushing as a treatment for bloating and indigestion because it helps remove toxins.
- Increases blood circulation to the skin, which helps to release toxins from within, as well.
- Unclogs pores and exfoliates the skin, leaving it looking brighter and feeling smoother and softer.
- Reduces the appearance of cellulite by helping to soften fatty areas beneath the skin. The Huffington Post actually tested out 12 home cellulite remedies and said that dry brushing was the most effective of everything they tried.
- Helps prevent ingrown hairs.
- Stress relief. The gentle brushing motion can turn into a meditation in itself, helping to free your mind of unwanted stress.
- Increased energy. (Avoid dry brushing close to bedtime because it can make it difficult to fall asleep.)
- Helps clear up keratosis pilaris (KP) – those pesky red arm bumps!
- Improves the appearance of colored tattoos.
- Itchy legs – most people say dry brushing helps with itchy legs, but some people experience more itchiness. This can be a result of using too much pressure when brushing.
- Micro-tears in the skin if you are prone to broken capillaries or use a brush that is too rough.
- Can worsen body acne. If you do have body acne, avoid broken out areas so that you don’t spread bacteria over a larger area.
- Can worsen eczema. If you have eczema, use a soft exfoliating mitt in the shower intend of dry brushing.
- Detox symptoms. While unlikely, detox symptoms can include diarrhea, vomiting, difficulty eating, headache, sore throat, and sore muscles. If you do have severe side effects you’ll want to either discontinue dry brushing or decrease the frequency. Talk to your doctor if symptoms continue for more than a few days. My conclusion after doing a fair amount of research on this subject is that it is definitely worth giving a try! It’s not often you come across an easy and effective method of improving your overall health and well-being in just a few minutes a day!
