Menstrual cramps are one of the most common gynecological complaints among the female population. Some estimates suggest that over 80% of college-aged women suffer from monthly pain. But as uncomfortable as they are, you don’t always have to reach for over-the-counter pain relievers….here is a alternative from Mother Nature herself! :-)
I have had horrible menstrual cramps ever since I can remember! There were many days in high school and college where I would be stuck in bed because the pain was so intense. I found out last year that I have relatively minor endometriosis which accounts for the pain I have. It’s nice to know the cause but that doesn’t help me when I’m writhing in pain on my bed every month! It is no fun. I’ve learned that I have to take pain medication before the cramps even start. I usually end up taking a lot more ibuprofen than I would like for those few days every month.
This past month it finally occurred to me that I need to find a more natural way to deal with the pain! I have no desire to end up with stomach ulcers from all the NSAIDs. I had a feeling Jillee’s sister, Rebecca, over at Camp Wander would have a natural cramp anecdote and I was right! She has the recipe up on her blog but I wanted to share it here as well for those of you who are sick of suffering every month.
Menstrual Cramp Pain Relief Blend
- 18 drops clary sage essential oil
- 18 drops marjoram essential oil
- 10 drops ginger essential oil
- 5 drops geranium essential oil
- 3 drops cinnamon bark essential oil
- fractionated coconut oil
- 10 ml roller bottle
Add the essential oils to the roller bottle. Fill the bottle the rest of the way with fractionated coconut oil.
Massage the blend onto the lower abdomen as needed.
Another great way to use this blend is in a homemade heating pad! Click here to get the instructions for making your own heating pad. If you already own a rice bag (or something similar) you can add the blend of oils listed to the rice in your bag before heating.
All of the oils in this blend work together to relieve painful cramps, but clary sage is definitely the star of the show! Clary sage is actually an antispasmodic so it works to stop cramps in their tracks. It can also help with bloating, mood swings and food cravings. Try diffusing it when you have especially bad PMS or during your period to help with mood swings.
