Thank goodness winter is over! My skin simply can’t take anymore cold, dry weather! Neither can my son Sten’s! We’ve both been suffering with badly chapped skin lately and can’t seem to get on top of it. So last week I decided to take matters into my own dry hands and try a homemade solution.
I bought some lotion bars a few years ago and was impressed with how rich and moisturizing they were. I figured that was a good place to start. I did some research and realized I had everything on hand to make my own lotion bars and set to work. The recipe I decided on couldn’t be easier. Equal parts beeswax, coconut oil, and shea butter, combined with lavender essential oil for its’ abundant skin benefits (and lovely scent.)
Since I also wanted something that I could easily take with me (since I’m always on the go lately!) I decided to make my “bars” miniature. Not only are they the perfect size to tuck in my purse, they are super cute. :-)
Mini Lavender Lotion Bars
What you’ll need:
- 1/2 cup beeswax
- 1/2 cup coconut oil
- 1/2 cup shea butter
- 10-20 drops Lavender essential oil
- a silicone mold
Directions:
Add the beeswax, coconut oil, and shea butter to a glass jar and set in a small saucepan full of water. Melt slowly over low heat.
Once completely melted, add the essential oil, then pour into mold.
I poured the melted ingredients into a plastic squeeze bottle. I find it MUCH easier to fill small molds (or jars, etc) this way.
Allow to cool. Mine had hardened completely after sitting by an open window for 20 minutes. Unmold. Store in a cool place.
To use just hold in your hand until your body heat begins to warm up the bar, then rub on your skin wherever it’s needed. It might feel a little heavy at first but within a few minutes your skin will feel so soft!
I slathered both my hands and feet before I went to bed and woke up to drastically softer skin! I also used it all over my extremely dry legs and couldn’t believe the difference. I LOVE these little gems!!
I decided to put a few in an empty mint tin to keep in my purse which had the added benefit of making my purse smell great! :-)
If you are in need of some serious moisturizing, I would strongly recommend making up a batch of these mini lotion bars. The combination of ingredients is serious relief for dry skin. Make some for a friend too! They will love you for it!
Omg love this recipe! I use Young Living’s Essential oils only bc the website shows exactly where the oil comes from and shows it is pure therapuetic grade so I am always trying to find pure, organic healthcare products to make myself. Thank you so much Jillee!
Hi Jillee,
Thanks so much for that recipe. I made it yesterday.
My question is:
It melts pretty quickly when it is not in the fridge. is this normal or have I done something wrong. I followed your instructions.
They should be solid enough to take with you :-) Adding more beeswax would help! Sorry for the mishap!
Where did you find your molds? Very cute!
Here they are! http://goo.gl/QT27jC
And a couple other cute ones :-) http://goo.gl/151Aih http://goo.gl/dsT146
I’m hoping that someone has advice for me… I made these last night for the first time. I’m not sure if I managed to mess this up or what, but my bars do not want to stay hardened at room temperature. I had mine on the counter in 68 degree room and it was tacky and soft. Also, has anyone had to u more than 20 drops of eo? Mine isn’t very lavender – y! Thanks in advance!
You can definitely add more EO if you want, the scent is more subtle! Hmm… I’m not sure why they won’t solidify! Are you sure you added 1/2 cup of each beeswax, shea butter and coconut oil? Did the ingredients melt entirely? Sorry I don’t have any other ideas!
as much as I’d like to try it, as they sound wonderfully easy, practical and cheap, I have some hygiene pet peevs! I just dont like the feeling of rubbing it on your hands, face, etc, leave them in a dark place for a few hours, and then rub them on my face again. I already have problems with acne, rubbing dirt all over my face several times a day doesnt sound cool. Yes I know the coconut oil has some anti bacteria properties, but still… I dont even trust my own lipstick! A makeup artist told me to take… Read more »
what can I use in healing salve and this recipe in place of lavender…I do not like the smell of lavender.
Geranium, rose, lemongrass, and frankincense are all great for skin! Any of them would work great in either recipe :-)
Is there any other oil I can use in place of lavender in this and in the healing salve? I do not like the smell of lavender but would like the same properties.
Thanks
Geranium, Lemongrass, Rose, or Frankincense would work great :-)
Awesome.. love your site Jill!! Where the heck can you find those itty bitty molds??? I can only find the odd silicone one at holidays time, and never one that small!!

I love your website & I love this idea butbI live in a hot climate although it’s raining now, but do you think you have anything to add to this to form a lotion. I know I may have to leave out the beeswax. Can you give me an idea of what to do? Thanks & keep connected.
I would try this recipe instead :-) http://ogtbj.com/1IYLo8A
Well, you have been asked about everything but the mold you used for this recipe! Ha! Can you tell me where you got it? Thank you!
Here’s a link to a similar one! http://goo.gl/EU022f
Julie,
The exact mold that Jillee used is an ice cube tray from IKEA. Granted, they don’t sell it online, but if you can go to an IKEA, they are 99 cents, as opposed to the one in the link that’s $9.99.
Thanks so much Jennifer! I could not remember where I had gotten it!
