Since this post comes perilously close to over-sharing, I’m giving you all fair warning right now. :-) I don’t usually post about such personal stuff (although I have on occasion – “My Triple-Threat Knockout Punch For Bladder Infections“) but since I know how many women suffer from this incredibly annoying problem, I felt it was my “duty” to share something that saved my life last week! OK, my life might be a bit of an overstatement, but if you’ve ever had a yeast infection I’m sure you can relate. Even if you’re not going to die, you FEEL like you’re going to! Am I right ladies? Yes, I am.
Anyway, without going into too much detail, last week I found myself with a raging yeast infection, or in technical terms, Candidiasis (which is simply an overabundance of Candida albicans – a yeast normally found in small amounts in the human body.) I’d already tried two rounds of the over-the-counter stuff to no avail and I was so miserable that I even made my first ever virtual doctor appointment to try and get some prescription relief. (This is not a sponsored post for Doctor On Demand, but I have to say that is one handy little app…especially if you live in a small town that has no “doc in a box” that’s open on weekends.)
I got a prescription, but TWO DAYS later, I was still suffering! I finally got smart and turned to what I SHOULD have turned to in the first place….my essential oils! Don’t ask me why it took me so long…I blame it on the fact that I was delirious with discomfort!
I’d recently done a post about My Favorite Health & Beauty Tricks Using Coconut Oil discussing how the lauric and caprylic acids in coconut oil are powerful antifungal, antiviral, and antimicrobial agents.
Combine that with the fact studies have shown lavender and melaleuca essential oils inhibit the growth of candida albicans….and I had a powerful remedy literally in the palm of my hand (or at least the cupboards of my kitchen!) I immediately got to work making up some coconut oil/essential oil suppositories.
Natural Yeast Infection Remedy
Here’s what you will need:
In a small bowl, melt about 2 tablespoon of coconut oil then add 4 drops of each essential oil. (This is a safe amount to start with – as long as you know you’re not allergic to any of these oils – but I used more like 6-8 drops each.)
Pour the combined oils into a silicone mold. I already had this silicone water bottle ice cube tray on hand that I found at the grocery store. It worked perfectly for this!
To make the pouring easier I transferred the melted oils into a squeeze bottle first. A slick way to handle filling molds, tubes, and pots.
Put the mold in your freezer until the oils have frozen solid. 15-20 minutes. This makes insertion of the oils much easier!
I broke each “stick” into 3 pieces (this recipe made 6 suppositories total) which made them the perfect “suppository” size.
The coconut oil will begin to melt as soon as it comes into contact with your skin, so you’ll want to use a pad or some toilet paper to absorb the oil. Repeat as necessary.
Not only was this incredibly soothing, it was the only remedy that finally WORKED for me! By that night I was almost completely symptom free! Hallelujah!
Note: If this is your first yeast infection, head to your health practitioner to firm up the diagnosis, but if you’ve been around the yeast infection block before, you might try this natural remedy to combat the problem.
