A few weeks ago I wrote a post about unique reasons to sign up for a meal subscription service like Blue Apron (my personal favorite.) A few of the reasons I included in that post talked about the idea of not ordering the meals for yourself, but purchasing them for someone else. After that post went up, I started getting a lot of comments and emails from interested readers who had never considered giving a meal subscription as a gift before. And I thought to myself, “What a shame!”
I think there are so many occasions where a meal subscription like Blue Apron would make the perfect gift. So I got to brainstorming, and came up with a list of 10 such occasions to share with you today! Because when you think about it, giving the gift of food is really a no-brainer. :-)
1. New Baby
Whether a loved one is having their first baby or their third, they could probably use a hand! And rather than taking them another casserole, why not give them a food gift they can use on their own time?
A Blue Apron meal subscription will allow those new parents to get fresh ingredients and recipes delivered right to their doorstep. This can be a lifesaver when dealing with a fussy newborn! They’ll be able to make delicious, gourmet meals on their own schedule, and save the dinosaur chicken nuggets for the kids. ;-)
I recently gifted a few weeks of Blue Apron meals to my friends Chris and Sarah, who gamely agreed to appear in the photos for today’s post! Their twins are 2 years old, so while it’s not technically a “new baby” situation, they are currently in the middle of a home construction project too! I think having a few ready-to-cook meals each week will help offset some of the stress of that situation (I hope!)
2. Moving House
In my opinion, there are few life events more tiring and horrible than moving. It’s a daunting task, and can consume all of your mental and physical energy for weeks! And the worst part is that even when all your stuff has been moved into your new place – there’s still so much left to do!
Buying a few weeks worth of meal subscriptions for someone who has just moved into a new place is a great way to help. They’ll at least have something they can cook in their new kitchen, without having to find time to make a trip out for groceries. It’s hard to overestimate the restorative powers of a healthy, home-cooked meal when most of your life is still in boxes!
3. Just Married
Getting married is a huge milestone in anyone’s life, and it can bring a lot of changes. If a couple isn’t already living together, they’ll be facing a big move and a lot of adapting! And even if they are already living together, the happy couple is probably up to their eyeballs in wrapping paper from wedding gifts and laundry from their honeymoon.
Instead of getting the couple a standard wedding gift, give them something you know they’ll use and enjoy – food! Getting a few weeks of Blue Apron meals can give the couple a chance to spend some quality time together in the kitchen. They’ll also have a few square meals to get them through the hectic post-wedding period!
But it’s not just newlyweds who could use some quality time together! Every couple, regardless of how long they’ve been together, could use a reason to spend time with their partner. And I think that meal subscriptions provide an excellent excuse! Spending time with your partner in the kitchen can be a great way to bond, and getting to enjoy a delicious, chef-designed meal together is just the icing on the cake!
A meal subscription would make a wonderful anniversary gift for your parents, grandparents, in-laws, or married kids. The couple celebrating their anniversary is sure to be surprised and delighted by such a unique and thoughtful gift!
There are times in everyone’s life when someone they love is hurting, whether they’ve lost someone, lost a job, ended a relationship, or are battling depression. It hurts to see someone you love suffering, but it can be hard to know how to help. I know that when I see a loved one in pain, I often feel torn between wanting to provide help and support, and not wanting to intrude on a personal situation.
Rather than hoping your loved one lets you know how you can help, you can find a way to take initiative without being overbearing. While it may seem odd, gifting a meal subscription can be a big help to someone who is going through a hard time. It’s a gesture that shows you care! And with Blue Apron, your loved one will be able to order their meals at their own speed. So even if they don’t use it right away, their subscription will be ready whenever they are.
6. Off To College
Heading off to college is probably the biggest change in a young person’s life up to that point. They’ll be living with new people in a new place, and that’s enough to throw anyone for a loop! Gaining the “freshman 15” is incredibly common in this period, because young people tend not to make the greatest food choices when they’re first out on their own.
If you have a new college student in your life, and they have access to a kitchen, you can help support them by gifting them a few weeks of meals! Not only will it ensure they’re eating at least a few healthy meals each week, but it will teach them valuable skills as well. They’ll get practical experience with chopping, dicing, sautéing, roasting, and other techniques that they’ll continue to use as they get more comfortable in the kitchen.
7. Big Tests & Exams
Whether it’s a college student preparing for their end of term finals, or a law student preparing for their bar exam, it’s bound to be a stressful time. Between classes, work, long hours studying in the library, study groups, and practice exams, students probably have very little time to worry about anything else!
Again, a meal subscription can be a great way to support your favorite student. Blue Apron’s balanced recipes and high-quality ingredients make for meals that will help fuel their brains, and they likely be ecstatic about not having ramen for dinner (again).
Once your favorite student has passed their exams and it’s time for graduation, it’s time to celebrate! And what better way to celebrate than with food? ;-)
The gift of a meal subscription is a great way to say “congratulations!” while still being practical and valuable. A couple of weeks worth of meals is probably more likely to be appreciated than another item with “Class of 2017” written on it.
9. Foster New Interests
One of the easiest ways to connect with your child, grandchild, niece, or nephew is to support them in their interests. If you have a child or teen in your life who has started expressing interest in cooking, there’s no better way to say “I support you!” than by giving them the opportunity to get cooking!
Blue Apron meals don’t require advanced skills or techniques to make. The recipe cards they provide have clearly worded instructions and full-color photographs, so even inexperienced cooks can feel empowered, not intimidated. And who knows? Your gift could inspire your junior chef to become the next Emeril, or the next Julia Child!
10. Thank You
And finally, giving a meal subscription can be a great way just to say “thanks!” In my experience, most people love eating, and most people dislike going to the grocery store. This is a gift that appeals to both of those things, so it should be appreciated by just about anyone! :-)
This post was sponsored by Blue Apron but, as always, all opinions are my own. :-)
