Some of you may be asking….what do Cinco de Mayo and Graduation have to do with each other? Well, in MY case, we are having a graduation party for my daughter Britta on Sunday which just happens to be….yep….May 5th…Cinco de Mayo! Since the two happen to fall on the same day I decided to give a nod to the holiday by adding this fun little idea to the mix. I mean who can resist an adorable Sombrero cookie!? I’m betting NO ONE.
I have been so busy the last few days that I was getting a little worried about even being able to come up with a post for today….but when I saw this idea on Spoonful.com I knew it was the perfect idea for the party AND a blog post. Two for the price of one. :-)
Now that I’ve made four dozen of these cookies, let me assure you it’s one of the EASIEST ideas ever. I “cheated” with store-bought cookies and frosting…but only because time was at a premium this week. And these aren’t gluten-free (because I had to buy them vs. bake them)…but, of course, they easily could be.
Quick and Easy Sombrero Cookies
Things you will need:
- cookies (the bigger kind work better)
- spice drop candies
How to assemble:
Start by pouring a good amount of sprinkles (or nonpareils if we’re being technical) onto a plate.
Now take your can of store-brought frosting and warm it up in the microwave for about 10 seconds. Stir. Then add another 5 – 10 seconds. The frosting should now be thin enough to pour. (Make sure not to get it TOO warm because it will be too thin and will run off your cookie.)
Then I poured the warmed-up frosting into this handy-dandy contraption I found hanging along one of the aisles of my grocery store. (Remember my Grocery Store Gadget Tour?) It worked PERFECTLY for this.
Pipe a circle of frosting about the perimeter of the cookie (hat)…..
…..then place your cookie upside down into the plate of sprinkles.
Turn back over and pipe a small dot of frosting in the center of the cookie and add one spice drop candy on top.
Pipe some more frosting around the edge of the candy.
Add sprinkles to cover the added frosting and shake off the excess (being careful not to shake the candy off the cookie! I might have done that a time or two.)
You just made an edible sombrero!
Now go make some more and surprise your friends and family on Cinco de Mayo with your crafty creativeness! :-)
