I recently went and had a facial and much to my surprise was informed by my esthetician that I seem to have developed a mild case of rosacea. I had never even considered this possibility, but in hindsight it made a lot of sense. I had noticed more redness in my face as of late that wasn’t blemish-related. Of course the first thing I did was some research. What I found out is that experts are not sure what causes rosacea. They know that something irritates the skin, but it doesn’t seem to be an infection caused by bacteria. It tends to affect people who have fair skin or blush easily, and it seems to run in families.
Not terribly helpful, but not terribly worrisome either. While I wasn’t overly concerned about this new development, it definitely had me on the lookout for a home remedies that might help.
One of the first things that came to mind was a detox facial mask of some sort, and the second thing that came to mind was Bentonite Clay.
This soft volcanic clay absorbs toxins, draws out impurities, and kills bacteria. It also has anti-aging benefits, because as it exfoliates the skin, it helps with cell turnover. Bentonite clay also helps oxygenate the cells, as it pulls excess hydrogen and allows the cells to replace it with oxygen instead.
I decided to combine it with some of my other favorite ingredients for skin issues….apple cider vinegar, honey and essential oil. ACV helps reduce inflammation; honey speeds healing and helps keep skin supple and glowing; and Lavender essential oil (which I used) inhibits the bacteria that causes skin infection & helps to balance the over-secretion of sebum.
Detox Clay Face Mask
This makes enough for one application.
- 3 tbsp Bentonite Clay
- 1/2 tsp honey
- 1-2 tbsp apple cider vinegar (enough to make a smooth paste)
- 5 drops Lavender essential oil (optional)
Mix the clay powder with enough organic apple cider vinegar to make a smooth paste. Add honey and essential oil. Avoid using metal utensils as this will reduce the effectiveness.
Apply to freshly washed face and leave on for 10 to 15 minutes. Wash off with warm water. Your skin may redden due to the blood being drawn to the surface which is perfectly normal and part of the skin detoxifying process and it will fade in 30 to 60 minutes.
With regular use (twice a week is recommended) you should see large pores reduce in size, your skin tighten, complexion clear and have an overall healthy and rejuvenated appearance.
I’ve only used it a couple of times but I definitely have seen a reduction in the redness! I’ll keep you posted.
If you are looking for a source for your Bentonite Clay….it just so happens that my little town is home to Redmond Clay. I have personally tried their products and can confidently recommend them as a source.
