If you suffer from oily and/or blemish-prone skin (and who doesn’t from time to time!?) you know how frustrating it can be! Well today’s post offers help! These DIY steamer tabs help control oil and shrink blemishes with the help of one of the best essential oils for problem skin….tea tree oil.
Britta writes…… I came across these Tea Tree Toner Tabs from LUSH Cosmetics the other day, and after taking a look at the ingredients list I knew I wanted to try a DIY version! I feel like I am constantly battling with my oily, acne-prone skin, so these tabs sounded like the perfect fit for me. The main active ingredient is tea tree oil (also known as Melaleuca essential oil), which has proven antibacterial and antifungal properties. The tabs are designed to be dropped into hot water and used to “steam” open pores, which lets the essential oil get in there and work its’ magic!
Tea Tree Toner Tabs
Here’s what you’ll need:
- ½ cup Baking Soda
- ½ cup Citric Acid
- 2 Tbsp Aloe Vera Powder – helps to soothe and calm irritated skin.
- 10-15 drops Melaleuca essential oil – antibacterial and antifungal
- 2-3 capsules of Chlorophyll (optional) – counteracts toxins trapped in your skin and calms inflammation
- Water or witch hazel in a spray bottle
- A plastic or silicone mold
First, start by mixing the baking soda and the citric acid together in a bowl.
Next, add the aloe vera powder, the Melaleuca oil, and the contents of the chlorophyll capsules. (If you can’t find Chlorophyll capsules at any of your nearby health food stores, you will probably be fine leaving it out.)
After all the ingredients are combined, fill an empty spray bottle with a little bit of witch hazel or water. I used witch hazel because I know it is good for the skin as well. Take your spray bottle and lightly mist the powder mixture. NOT TOO MUCH! Really, you just want to BARELY wet it down enough so that you can pack it into the molds.
This is what it should look like:
This is what it WILL look like if you get your mixture too wet! I share my fail because I care. :-)
Let the tabs dry in the mold, preferably overnight.
Once they are completely dry, remove them from the mold and they are ready to use!!
To use, simply drop one tab into a bowl full of hot, steamy water. Then, use a towel to cover your head and the bowl, creating a “steam room” for your face. Let the beneficial ingredients in the tab soak into your skin for around ten or so minutes. And that’s all there is to it! You can put the water from the bowl in a spray bottle and store it in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Use it to spritz tired skin whenever you need a lift.
This steam treatment would be an excellent opportunity to do a face mask as well, since your pores will be nice and clean, and more receptive to whatever treatment you decide to do next! I highly suggest trying the Honey Yogurt Facial, it feels delightfully cool after the steam!
Considering that these tabs cost almost $2.00 each retail…this DIY version for pennies each is a treat for your skin AND your wallet. :-)
