Many people turn to Vicks® VapoRub® when they have a bad cough and congestion. The ingredients in Vicks really aren’t that objectionable, with the exception of petrolatum – which is a by-product of petroleum. So if you avoid petroleum and you’re battling congestion from a cold or allergies, you will want to read on.
But even when the ingredients in a store-bought product aren’t dangerous, if I can avoid buying one more product, then I will! I love making homemade versions that work just as well, if not better, that I can make with things I already have on hand. Enter this simple homemade chest rub. It only has four ingredients, takes about 5 minutes to make, and works like a charm!
Simple Homemade Chest Rub
- 1/4 cup Coconut Oil
- 10-15 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
- 10-15 drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil
- 5-10 drops Lemon Essential Oil
Put the coconut oil in a glass bowl or jar and microwave for 5-10 seconds or until it is completely liquid. (If you don’t use a microwave, melt in a water bath at a low temp.)
Add the peppermint, eucalyptus and lemon oils to the coconut oil and stir to combine.
Allow the mixture to re-solidify at room temperature or in the fridge for easier use.
Rub on your chest, neck and back just like you would the name brand rub. Don’t put the mixture on broken or sensitive skin or apply it to your mouth, nose, around your eyes or anywhere on your face.
For young children you’ll want to use about half the amount of essentials oils. Don’t use this mixture at all on children under two. For children under two you can add a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil to their bath water or to a diffuser to help with congestion.
