Americans spend over $1.4 billion dollars in over-the-counter teeth whitening products every year! That’s a whole lot of whitening (and spending) going on. Almost everyone wishes they had whiter teeth. While there are a variety of options available, most people don’t think about natural methods. Britta is sharing one with us that I think is definitely worth a try!
Did you know that two powerhouse cleaning ingredients, that you probably already have on hand, can be used as a natural whitening solution for your teeth?
Baking soda’s gentle abrasiveness can help to erase surface stains on your teeth and break down plaque buildup. (To read about all the other wonderful things baking soda can do, click here.)
The oxidizing action of hydrogen peroxide allows it to get into all the nooks and crannies of your mouth to fight bacterial buildup. Using hydrogen peroxide for oral health has also been shown to protect against gingivitis, or inflamed/bleeding gums (source). Here, the addition of a little Peppermint essential oil provides a minty fresh clean feeling, and also helps to control bad breath!
DIY Teeth Whitening Solution
- 1 Tbsp baking soda
- 5 drops hydrogen peroxide, 3%
- 1-3 drops Peppermint essential oil
Add all three ingredients to a small bowl and mix well with a small whisk or a fork. Scoop up a small amount onto your toothbrush to use, using additional amounts as necessary.
Use this mixture once or twice a week to naturally whiten teeth, as well as promote oral health and fresh breath.
I’ll admit I was more than a little apprehensive to try out this method. The idea of putting hydrogen peroxide anywhere near my mouth was not very attractive! But I decided I would be a big girl and give it a shot, in the name of science. And wouldn’t you know it, I was very pleasantly surprised!! Using this mixture by no means tastes great, but it’s really not that bad, especially with the addition of the Peppermint oil. And after I rinsed, my whole mouth felt and looked SO clean! I can’t speak to the long-term whitening effects (yet!), but I’ll definitely be incorporating this treatment into my oral care routine.
