It won’t be long now before kids across the country will be heading back to the classroom. In addition to worrying about buying school supplies and getting schedules figured out, many people are also worrying about how their kids are going to perform in school.
For me this is one of the biggest worries at back-to-school time because ADHD, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, happens to run rampant in our family. In 2010, researchers at Michigan State University found that the traits of hyperactivity and inattentiveness were highly inheritable.
Children with ADHD usually have difficulty in school, because their symptoms—inattention, impulsiveness, and hyperactivity—get in the way of learning. One way to address the issue is through prescription medication. Psychostimulants (also known as stimulants) are the most commonly used ADHD drugs and some of the potential side affects include: sleep problems, decreased appetite, delayed growth, headaches and stomachaches, rebound (irritability when the medication wears off,) tics, and mood swings. Some ADHD medicines have even been linked to rare sudden death in children with heart problems.
Not the greatest option for kids if you ask me! But what’s a parent to do? Well, in the case of my sister Dori, whose son Jeddy was diagnosed with severe ADHD in first grade, she decided to take matters into her own hands.
Dori is a big believer in essential oils (must run in the family!) and began researching and eventually came up with her own blend of essential oils to help Jeddy cope with his ADHD symptoms. She named it “Jeddy’s Blend” and it has been so effective that my favorite essential oil company, Spark Naturals, began making and selling it.
I have posted about Jeddy’s Blend before, but I really think it bears repeating each year when school is about the start back up because I know there are many parents that have the same concerns Dori and I have about prescription ADHD meds and kids but don’t know what to do. And because this blend has actually helped so many families dealing with this issue. If you’re interested, you can go to JeddysBlend.com and read dozens of testimonials from people whose lives have been transformed because of this natural alternative.
Does any of this sound familiar to you? If you are the parent of a child suffering from ADHD, or know of anyone else who is, hopefully this information will help you realize you’re not alone and that there are options to prescription medication you might not have considered before.
