This is a sponsored post brought to you by thredUP. As always, the opinions and ideas expressed in this post are completely my own. I will always have a special place in my heart for secondhand clothes. Many years ago, when my “babies” were much younger, we didn’t have a lot of extra money (or any extra money, really) and I honestly don’t know how I would have clothed my 4 kids back then if it hadn’t been for our local thrift store. Nearly everything they wore at the time was secondhand, supplemented every once in a while with something I was able to buy new. Thankfully we’re not as financially strapped as we used to be, but my bargain-hunting sensibilities are still as sharp as they ever were. ;-)
But bargains aren’t the only reason I’m passionate about thrift shops and consignment stores. Here are 6 of my favorite reasons for shopping secondhand.

1. You Can Do It Online
While I am a big fan of shopping secondhand, I’m also a big fan of shopping online. I’m sure I’m not alone in wishing that there was a way to shop for secondhand clothes from the comfort of your own home!
I recently heard about a website called thredUP that is exactly that – an online consignment store! You can browse through an extensive selection of like-new secondhand clothes, sorting by size, color, or brand. It’s so much easier to find that perfect top when you don’t have to manually search through piles or racks of clothes!
And returning thredUP items is just as easy as, say, returning stuff to Amazon. So if you get a sweater you’re not in love with, you can just log on and print out a pre-paid shipping label. Slap the label on the box you received the clothes in, and send that sweater back for a full refund (minus a small handling fee).
2. You’ll Save Money
It seems obvious to say that you’ll save money by shopping secondhand. But you may not be aware of just how much money you can save! Many of my favorite finds at secondhand stores have still had the tags on them!
The secondhand fashions available on thredUP are always discounted up to 90% off the original retail price. I recently purchased this pretty beaded cardigan on thredUP that would have retailed for $107(!!!), but I only paid $17.99 for it. That’s 83% less than the retail price for an item that still had the original tags on it!
3. You Can Shop Your Favorite Brands
Shopping secondhand doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style! Many secondhand stores have tons of brand-name clothes and accessories just waiting to be snapped up by a savvy shopper like yourself.
One of my favorite things about shopping on thredUP is that you can search through their selection by brand. Finding a like-new designer skirt for 80% off can be your new norm, and not just a once-in-a-blue-moon stroke of luck! And thredUP is constantly updating their inventory with new items, so you never know what you might find!
4. You Can Still Have A “Boutique” Experience
Secondhand shops may generate images of grungy piles of outdated clothes, but modern consignment shops offer a the exact opposite! Many modern consignment shops closely resemble high-end boutiques, with collections that are every bit as curated.
Even your online experience can feel like you’re shopping from a high-end boutique. thredUP ships your items out in a cute polka-dotted box. Inside, your clean and beautiful clothes are perfectly folded, and wrapped in nice tissue paper. It’s feels much more like you purchased clothes from a department store than a secondhand store!
5. It’s Good For The Environment
Buying clothes secondhand is much better for the environment than buying them new. It takes an incredible 5,000 gallons of water to produce one new t-shirt! Think about how much you could reduce your carbon footprint by buying secondhand, even if you’re only doing it occasionally!
6. You Can Make Money, Too
Some secondhand stores will pay you for your your gently-used clothes. It’s a great way to get rid of that shirt you meant to return, or that pair of pants that looked better in the dressing room than they do at home. Free up some space in your closet, and make a few extra bucks while you’re at it! :-)
thredUP is one such service that will pay for gently used clothing items. Order a Clean Out Bag on their site, which will be mailed to your home. Simply fill it with the items you want to sell and send it back. Easy as that!
Both of the above outfits were thredUP purchases that came in my first order last week. I was so pleased with everything I ordered, I’ve already been back to the website to order more! You can’t beat the deals OR the cute looks you can put together!
I hope I’ve helped to ignite (or reignite) your interest in shopping secondhand!
