Whether you’ve been in your house for two years or ten, it can start to feel stale after a while. You might find yourself wistfully wishing about a newer, more beautiful home. The grass always looks greener on the other side! Here’s the secret – any home will start to feel stale and boring after a while. But with just a few simple changes, you can breathe new life into your home and fall in love all over again. :-)
I was recently planning to do a room “makeover” on my home office. The decor and furniture I had in there just weren’t working for me for some reason, and I wanted to downsize and simplify the whole room. I kept putting it off, until I received a very timely email from Houzz about collaborating on a blog post! Thanks to Houzz, I was able to find tons of inspiration, make a design plan, and find products to create the home office I had been dreaming about.
So today I’ll be sharing some details from my home office makeover experience, along with some general tips that you can use to refresh a room or two in your own home. My hope is that by the end of this post, you’ll have all the knowledge you need to rekindle your love affair with your home!
9 Easy Ways To Revitalize A Room
1. Get Inspired
So you’ve decided that you’re ready to give one of your rooms a much-needed makeover. But what next? It’s very helpful to start by getting inspired about the kinds of changes you want to make to the room. And the good news is that you can find inspiration just about anywhere!
I started my search for inspiration on Houzz, which turned out to be really fun and helpful! I started by searching through photos of home offices in their photo library. Looking at photos of other small home offices was so helpful, and I came away with plenty of ideas for the overall design of the room.
I saved the photos I liked in my ideabook, along with products and other design inspiration.
With the help of Houzz, not only was I able to find inspiration for my dream office, I was also able to purchase all the products, making my dream of a home office makeover into a solid plan! Houzz has more than 9 million products available for purchase, so you’re sure to find plenty of options that fit your style and budget!
2. Get Organized
Another good way to revitalize a room is to get rid of clutter and get organized! Clutter, junk, and other useless items can really sap the energy from a room. Take stock of everything in the room, including stuff in closets, on shelves, and in drawers, and be realistic with yourself about what you need and what you could do without. (If you find it hard to get rid of things, recruit a friend or family member to help!)
Donate any of the unnecessary clutter that’s still in good condition, and get rid of the rest. Then take stock of what’s left in the room. If it’s still a bit chaotic, use boxes, bins, or other organizers to separate and store your stuff. Getting rid of clutter and getting organized takes a bit of time and effort, but your room will feel brand new when you’re done!
3. Paint Your Personality
A fresh coat of paint is one of the most dramatic changes you can make to a room. Whether it’s just one accent wall or the whole room, you can use paint to express your own personality and style without making more expensive alterations or additions.
I’ve always loved yellow, so I chose a lovely, buttery yellow for the walls of my home office. It makes me feel happy and energized whenever I spend time in there! Other colors that lend a feeling of freshness and energy include neutrals, light blues, and light greens.
4. Move The Furniture
Looking to update a room without spending a dime? Move the furniture around! You can make a room feel brand new simply by changing the layout of the furniture you already have. Keep large and tall pieces around the perimeter of the room, and don’t forget to consider any walkways within the room.
One addition I made to my furniture setup was an ottoman I found on Houzz. It doesn’t necessarily “match” the armchair I paired it with, but it adds to the coziness of the room and makes that chair look extra inviting. :-)
If you need some help visualizing how a piece will fit in your room, Houzz has a great tool in their mobile app called View in My Room 3D. The tool lets you view more than 500,000 furniture and décor products in your room in 3D, so you can see how new pieces would work with existing furniture before you buy!
5. Change Up Your Artwork
And while you’re moving your furniture around, why not change up your artwork too? Move it around to see what looks good, and swap out any pieces that are starting to feel “stale.”
I like to switch out family photos and inspirational artwork fairly regularly, which helps keep things feeling fresh.
I purchased this gorgeous painting through Houzz and knew it would make a great addition to my home office! Not only does it remind me of the mountains surrounding the valley where we live, but it also happened to match the color scheme I planned.
6. What About Windows?
If something just isn’t feeling “right” about your room, consider your window treatments. Light makes a huge difference in any room! You can make the area more warm and inviting by swapping out dark, heavy drapes for light and flowy ones. Or if the window area could use some pizazz, add bold curtain panel! I opted for a linen curtain I found on Houzz, which adds some inviting warmth to the space.
Curtains and window treatments can be on the pricier end of things, but keep an eye out for sales and you’re sure to find a bargain soon enough!
7. Add An Area Rug
Never underestimate the transformative power of a properly-sized area rug! One of the most common mistakes people make in decorating is buying rugs that are too small for the space. A too-small rug can actually make the whole room feel smaller! But a properly-sized rug can add warmth, texture, and interest to any space.
8. Light It Up
Lighting is another design element that can make a major impact. If your room has old, dated light fixtures, consider swapping them out for fresh, modern ones. And don’t forget about your lamps! If you don’t want to replace a lamp entirely, try switching out just the lamp shade. It’s an inexpensive update that can make a big difference!
It’s the little details that turn a house into a home (or a spare room into a home office). Trays, baskets, mirrors, plants, and other smaller items can really make a room feel special! The best part about accessorizing a room is that it’s relatively inexpensive compared to some of the other makeover options, so go nuts!
One of my favorite decor items I put into my updated home office is a faux fiddle leaf fig tree. It has a modern feel to it and really brings a lot of energy into the space! So don’t be afraid of faux plants – there are a lot of great options out there!
I hope these tips leave you feeling inspired to breathe some new life and energy back into your home! My “new” home office is everything I had hoped it would be, and I owe a lot of it to the inspiration and products I found on Houzz!
