I am really excited to be posting on One Good Thing about weight loss because it’s something I am so very passionate about. Just to give you a little background on me, I struggled with weight my entire life. I didn’t really understand how you actually lose weight and often thought that it was much too hard to do because I had no idea where to start. I have two little kids and I run a shop online so finding time for the gym and eating healthy just didn’t seem like I could do it. February of this year I finally put my foot down and started to work on myself. I couldn’t afford not to anymore.
All I started doing was walking with my kids in my double stroller around my neighborhood. I cut back a lot of the foods I was eating and started to eat lean meats, vegetables, fruits, protein shakes, and lots of low calorie options. When I saw I had lost 10 lbs the first month I knew that I had to keep going. Eventually I ran my first 5k then I just completed my first half marathon last weekend. I have lost a total of 77 lbs and went from a size 20 to a 12. You can seriously do this with dedication, persistence and LOTS of hard work.
Lots of moms email me wanting to know advice for where to start. I am not a professional, but I am a real mom. A woman who is just as busy as the next and I know there will be days (even weeks) where you just cannot make it to the gym or eat healthy. It happens to me a lot! However, the one thing I have noticed is just keep going. For example, this week was Halloween and I have a huge sweet tooth. I knew that having candy around was going to be a huge temptation for me and I kept going back and forth on should I have some or should I not. Well I did give in, but I knew November 1st I was going to be right back at it and stronger than before. I think when we mess up, we give up completely and that’s the problem. Just keep going…it really isn’t the end of the world if you have several pieces of candy.

Another piece of advice I have is you need to reward yourself! My life before I would stress eat and when I was sad/happy/angry/depressed I would reward myself with food. I had a unhealthy relationship with food and once I realized how to start changing that, I immediately saw results. When I need a little pick me up, I reward myself with some new clothes. There is nothing more motivating to me than buying a size smaller shirt and then working towards fitting into it.
Saturdays are usually my cheat days and I try and limit myself to one big cheat meal. When I do this, I definitely feel satisfied. I also remember why I don’t like eating like that all week. I have gotten to the point where fast food or most restaurant food makes me sick because my body isn’t used to it. This keeps me in check when it comes to those cravings.
Start slow. You do not need to be running 5 milers in the beginning if you can’t even run a mile. There is no competition. In the beginning, I could barely run a quarter of a mile. I would go to our high school track and tell my self, just run 1 time around. It was so brutal, but I just kept at it. Then I ran 4 times around, making it a mile. I was so proud of myself for doing it because I could never do that before, even as a teenager.
Since then, I have kept increasing my goals and ran an entire half marathon. I had to hold back tears several times while running because I could not believe my body was doing such an amazing thing that I never dreamed of happening. Basically, set small goals for yourself. With time you will get better and do things you were never thinking could happen.
I have so much more excitement for life because I am not constantly worrying what people think about me and I have such a drive to try new things because my body doesn’t limit me anymore. I am hoping to be at my goal weight early next year, around 160. I know that it will be very hard but I can’t imagine not doing it now that I have come so very far!
