Detox Facial Mask For Rosacea & Other Skin Irritations

Detox Clay Mask

I recently went and had a facial and much to my surprise was informed by my esthetician that I seem to have developed a mild case of rosacea. I had never even considered this possibility, but in hindsight it made a lot of sense. I had noticed more redness in my face as of late that wasn’t blemish-related. Of course the first thing I did was some research. What I found out is that experts are not sure what causes rosacea. They know that something irritates the skin, but it doesn’t seem to be an infection caused by bacteria. It tends to affect people who have fair skin or blush easily, and it seems to run in families.

Not terribly helpful, but not terribly worrisome either. While I wasn’t overly concerned about this new development, it definitely had me on the lookout for a home remedies that might help.

Detox Clay Mask

One of the first things that came to mind was a detox facial mask of some sort, and the second thing that came to mind was Bentonite Clay.

I discovered the MANY HEALTH BENEFITS of Bentonite Clay quite awhile ago (you can read more HERE,) but never thought about using it as a mask until now.

This soft volcanic clay absorbs toxins, draws out impurities, and kills bacteria. It also has anti-aging benefits, because as it exfoliates the skin, it helps with cell turnover. Bentonite clay also helps oxygenate the cells, as it pulls excess hydrogen and allows the cells to replace it with oxygen instead.

I decided to combine it with some of my other favorite ingredients for skin issues….apple cider vinegar, honey and essential oil. ACV helps reduce inflammation; honey speeds healing and helps keep skin supple and glowing; and Lavender essential oil (which I used) inhibits the bacteria that causes skin infection & helps to balance the over-secretion of sebum.

This makes enough for one application.

Mix the clay powder with enough organic apple cider vinegar to make a smooth paste. Add honey and essential oil. Avoid using metal utensils as this will reduce the effectiveness.

Apply to freshly washed face and leave on for 10 to 15 minutes. Wash off with warm water. Your skin may redden due to the blood being drawn to the surface which is perfectly normal and part of the skin detoxifying process and it will fade in 30 to 60 minutes.

With regular use (twice a week is recommended) you should see large pores reduce in size, your skin tighten, complexion clear and have an overall healthy and rejuvenated appearance.

I’ve only used it a couple of times but I definitely have seen a reduction in the redness! I’ll keep you posted.

If you are looking for a source for your Bentonite Clay….it just so happens that my little town is home to Redmond Clay. Redmond Clay is a completely natural bentonite clay, extracted from the earth and brought to you in its pure, natural state. I have personally tried their products and can confidently recommend them as a source.

  • Do you by chance have a homemade remedy for “sun spots/dark spots”. I am ready to tackle them and would love your take on them. Thanks for all you do!

  • Chris mentions Standard Process Spleen PMG/ Heads up:Fantastic line of products -BUT- not gluten free. As a Holistic Healer I recommend Eee Wah Kee Sacred Healing Clay to all my patients for clay usage in/out side the body. Don’t forget the skin is the largest ORGAN in the body, and rosacea is an outward sign of an inward need to detox then balance the gut flora – no medication or lotion will address the CAUSE of rosacea!

  • Hope you didn’t use the metal measuring spoon to dip the clay or stir with – the metals react to each other and render the clay useless.

  • Jillee, I’d highly recommend seeing a dermatologist to get an actual diagnosis. There are other conditions that can manifest as redness on the face, some of which are quite serious (e.g. lupus erythematosus, sarcoidosis), others not as serious but treatable or manageable in specific ways.

  • After exploring a number of the articles on your blog,
I really appreciate your way of writing a blog. I bookmarked
it to myy bookmark site liust and wiol be checking back in the near future.
Please check out my website ttoo and let me know your opinion.

  • I had a flare up of rosacea a couple years ago and my naturopath said it’s often due to a sluggish spleen. The spleen actually does something?!! Lol. Yes, it’s part of the body’s purifying detoxifying process! He gave me a supplement for it and it cleared up in about two or three days. If I ever notice it coming back, I take the supplement for a week and it goes away. (Standard Process Spleen PMG).

  • Thank You Jillee for another wonderful skin care recipe! I really can’t Thank You enough. I have made many of your homemade cleansers, serums and moisturizers. This one sounds like it will be a great addition! I may have 60+ year old skin, but Thanks to you….I get so many compliments on how young my skin looks. No one believes my age. You have blessed us with both an inexpensive and chemical-free way to care for ourselves. Bless You!

  • I use this mask for the occasional pamper session thanks to you from a few months back. (As well as the detox bath you recommend. Heavenly!)

  • Jillee, keep researching- you will find that the underlying causal factor in rosacea is like so many things with the body- it all lies in the gut.

  • I received a sample of this product and noticed there’s lead in it. Not sure how much is in there and if we should be concerned or not? A facial does sound wonderful!

  • Jillee, I’ve followed you for a long time… Long before you had the fancy website with all the ads! (I miss your daily deals, but my wallet doesn’t!) I actually have severe rosacea but am hesitant to try your formula because it seems that you switch loyalties so often. I’m anxious to see if this mask actually helps you.

    • Hi. I’m fairly new with your site and blog but I’m enjoying it and have found many valuable tips, recipes and staying organic and producing my own cleaning products.
I have Asthma which has come back with increased severity. This mask sounds quite good ( I also developed Rosacea on my face and Eczema on my ears!)
My concern is with the clay. I have never heard of it.
I’m Canadian and I live in Alberta.
Does the clay producer in your home town sell to out of country. I will also check at my health care store.
I look forward to hearing how you are doing with the mask.

      • Hi. I am with Redmond and we do sell all over the world including Canada. If you cannot find Redmond Clay in your local health food store, you can find it online at http://www.well.ca. Best wishes on your pursuit of good health!

      • If your health food store carries bulk herbs they should sell a bentonite clay, might not be of the same brand.

      • Hi, I really recommend drinking a glass of water with organic apple cider vinegar in it ( a tsp or 2)! Oh how wonderful this remedy has been for my health for the past 3 years. My skin has been clear, my digestion issues resolved and my immune system so improved!

  • Do u still have contact with skin-beautiful serum tht you shared with us a year ago.you were promoting about a yr ago. I love her products but im wondering if she is still around. No posts on Facebook since February. I wrote her a couple times afterward and getting a message that her security certificate is not valid. No response from her. Finally found something my face loves. Thank if u can get a message to her she can more active on Facebook and those who have purchased…Sharon Miller
