I love making my own holiday decorations! Not only are festive DIY projects a great way to pass the time, but they can also save you quite a bit of money on store-bought decor. I’m usually more of a solo crafter, but even I think that today’s project would be a fun activity to get the kids involved in! (Hypothetically, of course, since my youngest child is 17 and I really don’t think he’d see the appeal in making holiday decorations with me. Darn teenagers!) ;-)
Creating this winter-y forest of doily trees is easy enough that you could knock it out yourself in an hour, or you could take it slower and get the kids involved. They’ll love getting to weigh-in on what your final forest scene should look like! Here’s how you can make your own.
Decorative Doily Trees
- Paper doilies
- Bamboo skewers
- Hot glue gun
- Glue stick
- Floral foam (half ball or similar shape)
- White spray paint (optional)
- Fake snow
First, if you have green floral foam, start by spray painting it white. (If you can find white craft foam, you can use that and save a step.) The foam tends to absorb the paint a bit, so don’t worry if it doesn’t turn out completely white.
Next you’ll assemble your doily trees! Start by cutting a line from the outside edge of a doily into the center. (We happened to have some green doilies at the studio, but white doilies would work just fine!)
Use your glue stick to apply glue along one side of the cut.
Pull the non-glued edge over the glued edge, and press firmly. Repeat the above steps with several doilies until you have enough “tiers” to create the amount of trees you want. We made 10 tiers in total, 6 each for a couple of small trees, and 4 for a taller tree.
Grab a skewer and use your hot glue gun to pipe a ring of hot glue around the skewer, about halfway down its length. (This will stop the doily from slipping off your skewer later on.)
Push one doily down until it bumps against the hot glue line.
Continue adding stripes of hot glue and sliding doilies onto the skewer until you’ve created as many trees as you want!
Assembling Your Forest Scene
Now that the trees are done, all that’s left to do is create a winter-y scene to put them in! Place your floral foam piece on a large tray or piece of cardboard, and then sprinkle a liberal amount of fake snow over the top. (If you’re worried about getting fake snow everywhere, use a spray adhesive as you go.)
Then stick your doily trees into the floral foam, and add any other decorations you’d like. (We added some cinnamon-scented pinecones we found at the craft store. Mmm!) I think it would be cute to add some little forest creatures in there too, just to round out the scene.
