Today’s post was born, unfortunately, out of my son’s recent hospitalization. A few months ago Kell had to undergo emergency surgery on his leg for compartment syndrome, which left him with two large scars on each side of his left leg! After the immediate concerns about his health were resolved, I started thinking about what sort of natural remedies there were for treating scars.
When I started to do some research, I found quite a few different natural remedies for both bodily scars and acnes scars. I decided to make two different treatments.
The first one is for scars from incisions, scrapes & cuts, stretch marks, and any other scars on your body. The second is a face mask formulated specificially for acne scars. Since they are both all-natural, it may take several applications before you start to see a difference. Daily treatment and patience is key, but over time your scars will start to lighten, heal, and shrink.
Natural Scar Cream
- 1/4 cup of your favorite carrier oil, or 1/4 cup of base salve
- 20 drops Lavender Essential Oil
- 10 Drops Rosemary Essential Oil
- 10 drops Helichrysum Essential Oil
- 10 Drops Frankincense Essential Oil
*A couple of these essential oils are quite expensive, but it’s because they are powerful oils with a lot of healing benefits. Edens Garden carries 5ml bottles of each which is more than enough!
Lavender is a great oil for any skin issue. It treats acne, sunburns, bug bites and even scars! Rosemary helps the skin cells to regenerate quicker, which is perfect for minimizing scar tissue. Helichrysum is an amazing regenerative oil that fights inflammation, heals wounds, and soothes skin. It’s pricey, but worth it! Frankincense is another anti-inflammatory that’s particularly useful when it comes to aging skin.
Each of these oils has amazing benefits for the skin, not to mention the benefits of your salve or carrier oil. I decided to use coconut oil for it’s antibacterial qualities and for it’s texture. A liquid carrier oil would work too, the application would just be a little more oily.
Simply mix together all of the ingredients (there’s no need to melt the coconut oil, just give it a good stir.) Keep it in a glass jar – preferably dark glass – and store it in a cool, dark place.
Apply the cream to your scars at least twice a day.
Face Mask for Acne Scars
- 4 Tablespoons honey
- 4 teaspoons lemon juice
- 3 teaspoons plain yogurt
- 1 egg white
Combine the ingredients with a fork or in a blender (it took a few minutes of stirring to get the honey mixed in – a blender might be easier).
The solution will be a liquid, so take a clean rag or paper towel and dip it into the mixture. I cut out a thin dish towel about 10 inches by 10 inches.
Get your wet towel, get comfortable, and place the towel over your face for 15 minutes. Put on a podcast, listen to a book on tape, or just enjoy fifteen minutes of doing nothing!
Apply this mask daily, depending on the severity of your scarring (twice a week is good for minimal scaring.) Your face will be a bit sticky after the application, so rinse it with warm water.
Keep in mind while you can minimize scarring, scars cannot be completely removed. However, if you are dedicated to using these remedies, you’ll see a vast improvement of unsightly scars.
