As I get *ahem* older…I find I need to wash my hair less and less. This is a good thing AND a bad thing. Good because I despise blow-drying my hair…bad because it essentially means my hair is MUCH dryer now. Recently I’ve started experimenting with using a leave-in moisturizing conditioner that I can spritz on my hair between washes that gives it added moisture, softness and shine.
I love this recipe! It gives my hair a subtle shine without leaving it “greasy” looking or feeling. It’s also inexpensive and simple to make!

Homemade Leave-In Moisturizing Conditioner
Ingredients:
- conditioner
- water
- 1 teaspoon carrier oil (almond, jojoba, olive or fractionated coconut)
- 5-6 drops favorite essential oil
Directions:
Add 1 part of your favorite conditioner and 3 parts distilled water to a spray bottle. You can adjust the amount of water depending on your type of hair. If your hair is fine, use more water, but if your hair is thick and coarse, use less water.
Add 1 tsp carrier oil (almond, jojoba, olive, fractionated coconut are all good choices) and 5-6 drops essential oil. I love peppermint and rosemary together!
Shake the bottle well to thoroughly mix the ingredients together.
Apply to hair before brushing. Can be used on damp, freshly washed hair, or dry hair. Store in a refrigerator to prolong the shelf life.
This recipe softens your hair, aids in detangling, and leaves your hair smelling wonderful! You can use this everyday or every other day if you’d like. It is one of the most moisturizing things I’ve ever used on my hair.
Now go out and flaunt that beautiful head of hair!
Do you use a leave-in conditioner?
Going to try this one, Jill!
Why do you call it DIY when you use store-bought conditioner??
Man, what a disappointment.
Hi Meh :-) Here’s a recipe for a fully homemade version: http://bit.ly/2W4mKE0
This is amazing stuff. My scalp was dry, itching and flaking. I love to wear black but was afraid to because of flakes. When I saw this recipe I tried it. WOW it works awesome. I use it about every inch or so in strips across my scalp then rub it in to distribute it. No more itching, no more flakes. An added bonus is that I was losing a wad of hair in the shower every time I washed my hair. No more. My hair is not shedding any more. Miracle stuff! I’m a believer.
SO glad you like it Sandra!
Ohmygosh!!! I made this on 6/20 when you posted it. I opted for skipping store bought conditioner and used aloe vera gel instead, added lemon oil and VOILA! This is all I use now, converting my friends and making batches for them, thank you!! My curls look amazing. :)
Great! So glad you’re liking it :-)
If you are going to make this, please use DISTILLED water. Any other water, especially tap water, contains all sorts of contaminants you DO NOT want in your product. Even better, boil that DISTILLED water for at least 20 minutes. And keep in mind, the preservative that was originally in the store bought conditioner will be ineffective in this new product you make because you have diluted it down. Without adding a new preservative, it’s not really a safe thing to use after 1 week, given that you used distilled water too AND put it in the fridge. And no, vitamin… Read more »

Thanks Edna! :-)
This would be a good use for those sample size hair conditioners that you get from hotels… Empty one bottle and clean out the same bottle 3 X with water to make this leave in moisturizing conditioner……
So smart Lea!!

I have extremely dry hair and I’ve been using Pantene as a leave-in conditioner for a very, very long time. It is an off-label use, but I apply it to towel-dry hair and it dries with a hold that looks and acts similar to a light styling gel. However, the moment you run your fingers through your hair, it gives way to perfectly smooth, touchable hair. I am excited to introduce Jillian’s Coconut and Peppermint oil suggestions right into the bottle. However, allow me to suggest, that if you need this level of conditioning (as I do), and you have… Read more »
