When it comes to healthcare, the true cost of a product or service is often shrouded in mystery. We type questions like “how much does a doctor’s office visit actually cost?” into Google like a fortune teller consults a crystal ball, hoping that an answer might emerge from its murky depths. Even when you want to know something as simple as the cost of a prescription medication, getting a straightforward answer from anyone can be a hassle.
I’ve had a lot of experience with the maddening mystery of healthcare costs over the years. So when my friends at RetailMeNot told me about their new tool for comparing real prescription prices, I was eager to give it a try (and to share it with you!) RxSaver by RetailMeNot allows you to search and compare prescription prices at thousands of pharmacies across the country, including Walgreens, Walmart, CVS, Costco, and more. And you don’t even need to sign up for anything or provide any personal information to use it!

Below, I’ll walk you through the very simple steps of finding and using RxSaver discounts to get the best possible price on your prescription medications. It honestly couldn’t be easier!
How To Get The Best Price On Your Prescriptions
Step 1 – Search
There are two ways you can use RxSaver to search for potential savings. You can use the RxSaver website, or download their mobile app from either the App Store or Google Play. Then just type the name of the prescription you want to look up into the search bar and hit “Enter.”
Once you see your search results, you can adjust your search by Brand, Form, Strength, Package, and Quantity to make sure they match your prescription information. (However, it can also be beneficial to see what other options are available for a given medication! I’ll explain why a little later in this post.)
Oh, and it’s worth mentioning that even if you have good health insurance, you should still take the time to compare prices for your meds on RxSaver. In certain cases, it may be quite a bit cheaper to pay the pharmacy cash price listed on RxSaver (which includes applicable discounts and coupons) rather than use your insurance. In fact, RxSaver can save you up to 80% on prescription medications!
Step 2 – Compare
Once you’ve dialed in your prescription search, you’ll be able to compare prices at different pharmacies near you. This is where things get really interesting, because you get to see just how much prices can vary between different pharmacies for the exact same medication!
There’s nothing wrong with choosing the pharmacy offering the cheapest price, but there are other factors worth considering too. You might consider the rewards or benefit program offered at certain pharmacies, or how convenient the locations are. (For instance, you might save $1 by going to one particular pharmacy, but it may not be worth it if that pharmacy is all the way across town.)
Step 3 – Save
Once you’ve decided which pharmacy you want to buy from, hit the “Get Coupon” button. Then you can either save the coupon to your phone in the RxSaver app, or print the coupon from the website and take it with you. When you pick up your prescription, just present the coupon to your pharmacist and they’ll use the information on it to get you the discounted price. How easy is that?
RxSaver In Action
After hearing about the RxSaver tool, I was immediately interested in giving it a try. As a family we’ve been buying certain prescription medications regularly for years to manage Type 1 diabetes, asthma, ADHD, and other chronic conditions. Nine times out of ten, we get our prescriptions from the pharmacy at the grocery store closest to our house. So I was definitely curious to find out if we could be paying less elsewhere!
I decided to look up my husband’s Ventolin asthma inhaler first, since in the past we’ve paid upwards of $75 for it. Using RxSaver, I found a coupon for our local Walmart that brought it down to $60! Definitely an improvement, but out of curiosity, I thought I’d check out the prices for the generic version of his asthma medication (albuterol sulfate).
While there aren’t any generic options for inhalers, I found generic options of other forms of asthma medication using RxSaver. For example, we could buy vials of medication for a nebulizer machine for about $0.30 per dose with the RxSaver coupon I found. The cost for his brand name inhaler is about $0.60 per dose, or twice as much! So now we can explore those cheaper options with my husband’s doctor, and I owe it all to RxSaver!
