What Is A Jade Roller?

A jade roller is a tool used for facial massage. They usually have a larger stone on one end to use on your cheeks, jaw, and forehead, and a smaller stone on the other end to use around your eyes and mouth.

Why jade? The practice of jade rolling originated in 7th century China, in part because jade was believed to promote balance, peace, and healing. And while jade is traditional choice of stone for facial rollers, you can also find rollers with quartz, rose quartz, amethyst, and other types of gemstones.

But the real benefits of using a jade roller are less about the properties of gemstones and more about the physical act of facial massage. There are plenty of benefits associated with facial massage that you can enjoy from using a jade roller.

3 Benefits Of Jade Rollers & Facial Massage

1. Tightens And Tones

Proponents of facial massage say that it can help tighten and tone your skin by increasing your skin’s natural elasticity. Increasing your skin’s elasticity can help improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles too.

2. Brightens

Another benefit of facial massage is that it helps boost circulation, blood flow, and lymphatic drainage beneath your skin. Better circulation and drainage means brighter, more youthful skin!

3. Reduces Inflammation

Gemstones like jade feel cool to the touch, and that cooling effect can do wonders for reducing inflammation under your eyes. When used regularly, a jade roller can help fight dark circles under your eyes and general puffiness.

How To Use A Jade Roller

Follow the instructions in the order they are listed, using light pressure on your roller. Repeat each motion 3-10 times, depending on how much time you have.

Step 1 – Clavicle

Starting at your collar bone along the midline of your body, roll downward and work your way out. Then repeat, rolling up from your collar bone instead of down.

  • I was really happy to see this article. I have a jade roller but just couldn’t imagine it really doing anything. Now I’m confident it will be actually helping my face tone up even a little after regular use. Thanks Jillee!

  • Thank you jillee I also love jade rollers (I think mine is opal) I just wondered if you or any of your subscribers have encountered ticklish feelings just underneath the cheekbones? Not a tingle tickle like if you stroke a feather over your skin, more like the deep tickle from your ribs. I hope it’s not just me because it’s delightful!

  • I ordered one from your link above and received it today. Included in the box was also a flat tool that came with no explanation. Do you know how this extra tool is used? I am excited about using my roller tonight whenI clean my face!

  • Hi Jillee! I am so happy that you wrote about this today. I’ve known about the benefits of facial massage for quite some time as I am a massage therapist who has given many facial massages, just never seem to ever get one! Also, in case you and/or your readers are not aware, this tool or just your fingers can be used to alleviate sinus pressure, headaches and congestion. I’ve been wanting to purchase a jade roller but each time I go online to research, I get so overwhelmed & confused and then mad (LOL) when you start to read the reviews and they are very clearly written by the owner and their close family & associates. The last one I looked at was recommended by Rank & Style & their “trusty algorithm” and almost all the reviews were fake. So, I am very happy and relieved in knowing that I can trust you and your experience with the specific tool you purchased and I can’t thank you enough for doing the hard work. Im adding it to my already way too full Amazon cart! Thanks again Jillee, I love reading your blog everyday!

    • Stephanie, good point on the help with sinus issues. I only get with an occasional cold but good idea. I too am delighted Jillee posted this article. Now I know my jade roller will actually do something. It’s always true, I think, that ancient Asian knowledge is truly amazing.

  • Thank you so much Jillie. I recently received one in a special box I get quarterly and I was wondering how I was going to utilize this tool. Its so funny how information just presents itself when you need it. Thank you again and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE reading all you wonderful tips and great information. Keep up all the good work that you are doing! :-)

  • I’ve had a rose quartz one for years. I got it for TMJ pain and it really does help with that. Can’t say I’ve noticed anything with my facial skin, however.

  • Great idea. Are there any good brands of rollers. Im very hesitant to spend the money on one because of some of the reviews of rollers breaking after 1-2 uses.I really don’t want to spend of money on one.
