The dog days of summer are upon us and it is HOT here in Utah (like upper 90s hot!) and according to the weather forecast it is going to stay that way for awhile! In this kind of heat, you instinctively start looking for ways to stay cool. I’ve officially placed a moratorium on the use of the oven, and anyone who leaves an outside door open for more than an instant is met with a chorus of “You’re letting the heat in!”
In addition to our various household measures, I personally like to keep cool by eating and drinking cold things. You know how I love my frozen grapes and frozen yogurt dots. ;-) So when I came across the idea of making frozen serving bowls, I was practically shivering with excitement! ;-) I’d do just about ANYTHING to help keep things cool around here!
Not only do these ice bowls keep your food cold, but they’re a feast for the eyes as well! These quick and easy decorative frozen serving bowls will be the star of any spread!
Decorative Frozen Serving Bowls
- 2 bowls, one slightly larger than the other
- Decorative filler material (optional)
Start by filling your larger bowl with about an inch of water, and place it in your freezer.
Once the water is frozen, remove the bowl from the freezer, then place your smaller bowl in the larger bowl, resting on top of the ice. We placed some little flowers in the gap between the bowls at this point, for an extra special touch, but that’s totally optional. :-)
Fill the gap between the larger bowl and the smaller bowl with water.
Place the bowls back into the freezer. Make sure that the smaller bowl is situated in the center of the larger bowl (so that your finished product doesn’t come out with uneven edges). If your smaller bowl isn’t staying put, you can weigh it down with something heavy, like a bag of dry beans.
When you’re ready to use your ice bowl, remove the bowls from the freezer and place them in your kitchen sink for about 10 minutes. This will allow just enough thawing that the bowls will slip away easily, leaving you with a beautiful ice serving bowl!
Fill your serving bowl with fruit, ice cream, or anything that is best served chilled. Enjoy!
