Mississippi Comeback Sauce…the southern cousin to Fry Sauce!

Comeback Sauce

Quick! What’s your favorite condiment!?!? For me it would have to be MUSTARD…followed VERY closely by a Utah tradition…..Fry SauceHere in Utah, when it comes to sauce….it’s all about the Fry Sauce!  But in Mississippi…..apparently Comeback Sauce is the queen mother of condiments! It’s supposedly a lot like the Bloomin’ Onion sauce at Outback and goes with EVERYTHING….except Cheerios. :-)

It can be used on burgers, as a sandwich spread, smeared on saltines, as a salad dressing (think Thousand Island with a kick!), as a dip for raw veggies, or shrimp, or onion rings, or french fries, well, you get the picture. Most of the recipes I read for Comeback Sauce agree on the proportions of mayonnaise to ketchup to chili sauce, but after that it’s pretty much  up to personal preference. Personally, they had me at “1 cup mayonnaise”.

Comeback Sauce

So without further ado….I bring you…

Mississippi Comeback Sauce

adapted from “Syrup and Biscuits

Makes a pint jar full.

  • 1 cup homemade mayonnaise or store-bought
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup chili sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon Tabasco sauce
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • juice of one lemon

Mix all ingredients well and store in refrigerator overnight.  It needs to sit to let the flavors become “acquainted”.

Use on EVERYTHING (except cheerios)!

  • We go to this one restaurant and they have several sauces they serve with their fries. They are so good and I would love to get a recipe for them. They are:
    Campfire
    Tavern
These two are my favorite and if anyone knows how to make would love the recipes.

  • My mom mixed mayonnaise and ketchup together and called it French (salad) dressing. She served made it to use with our salads, so I guess it does go with almost everything!

  • This seems like Remoulade sauce… i love love remoulade and its so hard to fine up north. So going to have to try this. cause almost $3 a bottle. Yea i don’t use it often but to make my own when i do want it :) :)

  • Does it taste like fry sauce? My boys fell in love with "Some Dude's Fry Sauce" last summer when we were in Utah. I found one bottle in a specialty store once we got back to Missouri. They are rationing it. I never considered making our own.

    • Fry sauce is simple – just mayo and ketchup. I like mine heavy on the mayo, but all you need to do is mix the two until you get the taste you want. I have also had a version that was mayo, ketchup, and barbeque sauce that is equally delicious!
