Take The Farmer’s Market Challenge!

Farmer’s markets are a great place to purchase fresh, healthy, and delicious food directly from the source! With farms across the country bustling with activity this time of the year, it’s the perfect time to go check out YOUR local farmers’ market. And to make it even more enjoyable…Britta has a fun challenge for us!

Britta writes……..  One of my favorite things about the summer months is going to the local farmer’s market on Saturday mornings with my husband Neil. We have a few things that we pick up almost every week, like farm-fresh eggs and tasty salsas, but we also like to try to get a few interesting veggies or greens as well. We’ve both been trying to be more adventurous with our cooking and eating habits, so I thought it would be fun to turn that into a summer eating challenge!

My “Farmer’s Market Challenge” is simple and fun! (And you don’t necessarily have to have access to a farmer’s market to participate.) All you have to do is commit to purchase one fresh fruit or vegetable per week that is unfamiliar to you, and use it in a recipe. Not only will you get to try out a lot of different things you might not normally try, but you’ll improve your cooking skills as well by learning how to cook or prepare those new fruits or veggies.

For my first week of the Farmer’s Market Challenge, I found some gorgeous golden beets for $3 a bunch. I’ve only used beets in a recipe once before, and they were standard red beets, so this is definitely an ingredient that I am unfamiliar with!

So now that I’m home with my beets all ready to go, I’m ready to find a recipe that I can use them in. One of my favorite resources for finding recipes is Yummly.com, which has great search tools that help you find exactly what you want to make.

The most helpful function for our purpose is the option to choose what ingredients the recipe contains. So I searched for recipes containing golden beets, and received dozens of links to really yummy-looking recipes!

I think I’m going to go with this recipe for Root Vegetable Hash and Poached Eggs from Williams-Sonoma. It sounds so good!

  • Try long beans from the asian farmers. They are delicious. Chop and use as a stir fry or I like to boil until they still have a bit of crunch left. Cool and use asian dressing and raosted red bell peper strips to make a delish side dish or main dish salad if you add some chicken and peanuts.

  • I make a great salad with golden beets that my entire family loves! Even my dogs want to eat it!

    1 raw golden beet, peeled & shredded
    2-3 golden delicious apples, peeled & shredded
    Juice of 1/2 to one whole lime

    Just mix the beet and apples together and squeeze on the lime juice to taste. Start with 1/2 a lime so it doesn’t end up sour.

    It is swweeeeeet and delicious! Great for a hot summer afternoon. Enjoy!

  • This sounds like fun! I’m in! We have a healthy farmer’s market here and I could always use a reason to visit.

  • I have been shopping farmers markets for years. Now that we have moved to florida it gives me new markets to explore. But surprisingly there were more farmers markets in NC. Since the vast majority of our nations food comes from fla and ca you would think there would be more.

    Great challenge. We lead 2 lives. City life where we grew our children and consider our home, and quieter life in a rural state that is mostly farmland with oceanside resort towns. Surprisingly, there are waaaay more Farmers Markets, with a lot more local-farm, organic products, in the city! Go figure.

    It will be so much fun to join this challenge. We love trying new things and this will be a great way to help us remember to pick up more than just our grocery list when we’re poking our way through.

  • We have a great farmers market in our square in Medina, OH every Saturday. I’ll try your challenge of something really new each week!

  • I bought some golden beets a couple of weeks ago and made some beet kvass. I normally use the red beets for it but decided to try the golden this time around. I also picked of some orange cauliflower. It was delicious. Next time I get it I might use it in my hummus instead of the chickpeas.

  • I have eaten a lot of different veggies in my life but this challenge you have given sounds great and will try it out for sure.
