I really didn’t think this through when I decided on doing this contest. It was WAY HARDER than I ever imagined it would be! Choosing just TEN FINALISTS from the over 400 amazing tips, ideas, solutions, tricks, etc. was BRUTAL!! Seriously. I had to edit and re-edit and then re-RE-edit the list! I even had knock-down, drag-out FIGHTS with my “panel of advisors” over who should make the cut! Not really.
But I did argue with my sisters at the very end when I had finally managed to get it down to 15 and had to cut it down to 10. Brutal I’m tellin’ ya! So….in no particular order…..here are the TOP TEN Finalists in the “One Good Thing By YOU” Contest! (The FIRST of many more to come!)

NaDell – Baby Shower Gifting Tip
My best tip is that at your baby shower write the giver’s name on the clothing tags so you can remember who gave it to you when the baby gets to that size. I like to pair this with having the baby wear that outfit when the giver will see them in it. What’s better than giving a cute little baby outfit than seeing the adorable baby IN said outfit?? I did this (on my own) right after my first baby shower with my oldest and have been sharing this tip with friends at their baby showers ever since.
Betty Bergeson – Vinegar Socks
Vinegar Socks. I know this is going to sound strange but it works, I know because my mother usedit on my brother, who was very ill as a baby; I’ve used this on my children when they had high fevers and they have used it on their kids. An old neighbor taught this wonderful treatment to my mom. She was from Germany. When you have a baby or small child who has a very high fever and medication just won’t bring it down. Take a pair of white socks, soak them in apple cider vinegar or white vinegar. Put them on the childs feet and wrap the feet in a towel. Wait till socks have dried, if fever is still high, repeat. I’ve never had to do it twice, once has always done the trick. Trust me ladies this does work.
Brenda Lerwell – Tea Tree Oil Toothpaste
My good tip is to sprinkle a drop of tea tree oil on your toothbrush along with your regular tooth paste. The taste isn’t the best, but you do get use to it and it soon won’t bother you! The benefits out way the taste! This makes your teeth so clean and smooth feeling. It is so good for your gums and heals them if you suffer from sore gums. Since we have been doing this the trip to the dentist is a breeze. When we get our teeth cleaned there is always a comment on how clean our teeth are and how they didn’t have much plaque to take off. I love tea tree oil!!!
Arlene – Better Than Go-Gurts
My one good thing is to use straws (big ones work best) to serve your children yoghurt. Just peel back the top just enough to insert the straw and let them suck. So little mess, and far cheaper than a Go-gurt!! My 2 yr old can feed himself without getting yogurt everywhere– now that’s a good thing, in my book. It’s a great healthy snack that works well in the car. Easy for the driver to eat (suck) too. :)
I loved your tip about making your own popsicles with yoghurt and will often do that if one of my preschoolers doesn’t want to finish their yoghurt. Just stick in a popsicle stick and pop it in the freezer to finish later. Yum!
Julie – Spiders Hate Peppermint!
So I guess my other favorite is finding out that spiders hate Peppermint. Guess what essential oil fills my garage and door frames??? You can put it in a squirt bottle with a little water or use it straight! Bye bye chemicals!!!
Tiffiny Sanders – The Secret to the Fluffiest Baked Goods Ever
For the fluffiest baked goods EVER, my secret weapon is…Lemon Juice!! Add a teaspoon or two to baked recipes that include baking soda or powder and BE AMAZED! The lemon juice SUPER activates the baking soda/powder and makes baked goods SUPER FLUFFY and yummy!!!
Sharon Goetz – “Just Off The Grill” Frozen Patties
One of my favorite ideas for summer (or even other seasons) is to buy one of the bulk packs of good sirloin hamburger patties at Costco. Grill them all off (no need to make multiple trips to the grill) at once. After they have cooked, I place them in a 13×9 pan. In a sauce pan, heat 2 cups water, 1 heaping tablespoon of beef base and several liberal dashes of liquid smoke. Let that come to a simmer or until the beef base has dissolved. Pour over the patties and stir them up so each absorbs a little of this broth. Then, I pack them up in freezer bags containing however many my family would use per meal, divide up the broth and refreeze. When it comes time for a quick burger, just microwave out of the bag, with the broth and you have a “just off the grill” tasting burger, with no extra fuss.
Cris saenz – Keeping Guac GREEN!
My one good thing is how to save leftover guacamole without it turning completely brown. All you do is place the guac in the container and spray the top of guacamole with non stick cooking spray and place in the refrigerator. The next day the guacamole will still be green.
Tammy Larsen – Soothing Nighttime Foot Treatment
My favorite personal tip is one that sits on my nightstand and I use it faithfully to keep my skin soft and healthy. I have a bottle of fractionated coconut oil and a bottle of grapefruit essential oil and I mix a little of the two together. I apply it to my feet and arms before turning out the light and it absorbs surprisingly fast. This is a healthy, natural and beneficial alternative to lotions that works beautifully and smells lovely. Blissfully soft skin and it costs pennies to make. I have been using the same two bottles for months now.
Heather – Biscuit Cinnamon “Rolls”
My one good thing is biscuit cinnamon rolls. If course I love my grandma’s recipe, but any will do. It’s so easy. First of all, you can make the biscuit dough in a food processor–no cutting in butter/shortening! Then, no rising needed. You just make the dough and go straight from making the rolls to putting them in the oven. And with only a 10 minute baking time, the family gets them quick. Last, they are so flaky and delicious…. If I didn’t have work in 15 minutes I would be making these right now!
