In our house we only have one small storage closet in the hallway that leads back to the bedrooms, so we have use it for several different purposes. Until recently, not only did I store extra linens in that closet, but it also housed cleaning supplies, paper products, office supplies, and more!
With as much stuff as I had crammed into that one tiny closet, it won’t surprise you to learn that it was basically impossible to keep it all organized. But during one of my most recent closet re-organization efforts, I realized a couple of important things.
The first realization was that we had more spare sheets and pillowcases than we really needed (or that anyone really needs). The second realization was that all that bedding was occupying valuable shelf space that I could be using for other purposes.
I was ultimately able to solve both problems at once by making one simple switch! And that’s what today’s post is all about, because I’ll be sharing the brilliant bedding storage hack that helped me solve my closet organization problems.

The first thing I did (which I probably should have done a long time ago) was get rid of most of the extra bedding we had. I decided to keep just one extra set of sheets and pillowcases per bed, but that was only the beginningโthe real difference-make was where I ended up storing those sheets!

How To Store Your Bedding Underneath Your Mattress
I decided to move the extra bedding sets and store them under the mattress they belonged to. Not only did this free up a lot of valuable space in my linen closet, but it also ended up being a really convenient system too (but more on that later).
Hereโs how you can put this brilliant storage hack to work in your own home!

Step 1 – Fold The Bedding Neatly
Start by folding your sheets as neatly as possible. This will help prevent them from getting wrinkled while they are tucked away.
Need some pointers on how to fold a fitted sheet? Check out the instructions at the link below!

Step 2 – Stack It All Together
Stack your folded sheets and pillowcases together, or you can make a handy bedding “package.โ To do this, slide the folded sheet(s) and one of the pillowcases into the remaining pillowcase to keep them bundled together.

Step 3 – Tuck It Under Your Mattress
Finally, tuck the extra set of bedding between your mattress and box spring. (I recommend putting it near the foot of your bed close to the outside edge, where it will be easily accessible yet less noticeable.)
And thatโs all there is to it! :-)

Why It Works
Not only does this storage hack free up space in your linen closet, but it also keeps your bedding fresh and dust-free! When itโs time to wash your bedsheets, all you have to do is remove the sheets, pull the clean set out from under your mattress, and remake your bedโit doesnโt get much quicker or easier than that!

I think that I may have mentioned that we have a queen platform bed with a storage drawer under my husband’s side of the bed. I keep our extra sheets there.

What about one of those under bed storage containers? I store mine in a cedar chest I’ve had for years. But I think if you have nothing else those storage containers are a good idea.

Please log in or create a free account to comment.I am one of the fortunate people who has a drawer under our bed. We have a queen size bed and the drawer is under my husband’s half. I store several sets of sheets and matching pillow cases there, along with a shower curtain that I use in winter months.
I know that I am fortunate. I have a drawer under our bed and it is large enough to store my extra sheets and pillow cases, along with the shower curtain that I use in winter months. It is nice to be able to put different sheets and pillow cases on our bed every week.

Please log in or create a free account to comment. As well as putting the sheets spare pillowcase in matching pillowcase I also do this with all my spare duvet covers. I fold up duvet cover + the matching pillow cases that go with it often four of them and then put them in the last one, they’re all in the neat pile and I never have to go hunting for the matching pillow cases eccetera
Please log in or create a free account to comment.I love this idea! I have a sleep number mattress but I could still store clean, thoroughly dry sheets. I have about 20 pillowcases that I change at least 3 times a week so those are folded and in plastic. I don’t do wash but twice a month for myself so I’m storing two sets under there tomorrow.

Please log in or create a free account to comment.I’m 70 and I never ironed sheets. We all used to love the smell of freshly washed sheets that were dried outside on a clothesline. Now with all the allergens from pollen, grass, trees, and bugs I no longer hang anything outside.
Please log in or create a free account to comment.Yah, I’m with those who will not be lifting a king mattress to store sheets. I don’t even want to lift it to get the fitted corners in place or make hospital corners. And sheets under there would get in the way of smoothing the corners! Plus, I feel every variance above or below the mattress, and it annoys me enough to get me out of bed in the middle of night to correct whatever. That old fairy tale is real – some of us can feel the pea!

What a brilliant tip! My home is small and storage space is very limited. Keeping clean sheets folded and stashed under the mattress frees up space in my linen closet. And the clean sheets are right there when it’s time to change them. Thank you.

Please log in or create a free account to comment.I have always had just one set of sheets for each bed. I launder them as usual each week. Put the sheets back on the bed right out of the dryer. No folding and no storage required. When they wear out, buy new and start over again.
Some have said to me they donโt like looking at the same sheets for that long. I respond, โHow much time do you actually spend looking at your sheets? They are covered with a bedspread during the day and at night you are sleeping on them. Nope, I donโt look at them much at all.โ

Please log in or create a free account to comment. It’s worth a try! The only issue would be that you might feel the “lump” of the sheets through the memory foam. So place them closer to the foot of the bed, and lie down to see if you can notice them :-)
Please log in or create a free account to comment.I am hoping to fit all of my linens into under bed rolling bins as my upstairs laundry room shelves are in lieu of a linen closet (I guess). I love the idea of linens kept with the bed they go on.
Please log in or create a free account to comment.I have a sleep number bed, so I don’t have that space between. I like the person who stores them in the extra pillow/sham.
Please log in or create a free account to comment.I too have a Sleep Number bed and my husband and I love it especially the adjustable base. Our next one will be the full split King with the adjustable base that splits so I can sleep while my husband watches his Netflix or whatever. The only way we could put sheets or blankets or whatever under our bed would be in a cat proof clear box under the bed away from the mechanics of the adjustable bed.

Please log in or create a free account to comment.I have an air mattress and many blankets with no storage. I thought..hmmm…lay them flat one over another, topped with my sheet on my bed. Gives me more cushion to sleep on. When i change sheets i may rotatw blankets, shake them or throw in dryer to fluff. I need to quit buying them!!! Haha

Please log in or create a free account to comment.I have been storing blankets under my bed for years! Just fold in half and lay them neatly under mattress! Will half to try sheets too!
Please log in or create a free account to comment.I have two old-fashioned cedar chests, one from my grandmother and one was my mom’s. They sit at the foot of the beds in my room and the guest bedroom. I keep all my extra linens and blankets in those.
Please log in or create a free account to comment.I would still keep my extra sheets in our linen closet, but you did give me an idea about storing extra quilts. Instead of putting them under the mattress though, getting a bag and keeping them under the bed would help with the extra space in our closet. Since quilts should not be put in plastic bags, I would get, or make a cloth bag for them.
Please log in or create a free account to comment.Been doing exactly this for years. I bought a comforter that came in the usual large zippered clear plastic. I put my clean sheets in there with a dryer sheet, slip it under the bed and I am good to go! Best sheet storage remedy ever!
Please log in or create a free account to comment. That’s very good idea! But if you don’t mind your bed being unmade for a little while, I just wash them and put them straight back on the bed. Really no need for an extra set of sheets…..
Please log in or create a free account to comment.Freshly washed sheets should never be put on the bed. The fibres need time to “relax”. This extends the life of the sheets especially if they are expensive.
Please log in or create a free account to comment. That’s my solution. Use one set for a season before switching it up.
Please log in or create a free account to comment.I fold them and store in one of the pillow cases and then that goes in a matching pillow sham. The sham is one of the pillows that gets removed at night and put back when the bed is made in the morning. I hide them in plain sight.

Please log in or create a free account to comment.Hi. I would like to know if I can obtain the type of shelving in your closet from amazon as I live in the uk ?
Please log in or create a free account to comment.I, too, store a set of sheets under the mattress. However, I fold them into a WIDER rectangle and lay them flat under the mattress by the feet. I especially like to do that in the guest bedroom and I tell guests where the clean sheets are in case they need them. Sometimes they even change the sheets before they leave…… a bonus! ;)

I like to store my extra sheet set in the bottom drawer of my nightstand….they are very handy and just fit.
I avoid a drawer full of odd “stuff” that way, and I am not tempted to add to my sheet collection as only one set will fit.
