We’ve all done it! Put a pot of something on the stove, forgotten about it (or had the heat turned up too high,) and the next thing you know your pan has a layer of burnt on crud that shows no signs of ever coming off! Ugh. So frustrating! But no need to fret because there is more than one way to clean that mess and return your pans to their original glory! As a matter of fact I polled just about everyone I know and came up with TEN effective ways!
Depending on who you ask, theirs is the BEST way to do it….so I’m going to share all their cleaning tips and leave the final decision up to you!

Sprinkle a cup or two of baking soda in the bottom of the scorched pan and add just enough water to cover. Simmer for 15 minutes to 1/2 hour, repeating if necessary. The most crusted on black burned mess will fall right off leaving a sparkling pan. Ordinary table salt will work in a pinch as well.
Bar Keeper’s Friend to the rescue. Apply the cleanser to the surface or to a wet cloth or sponge. Rub in a circular motion to loosen bits or oils. No need to rub hard, as the solution should do all the work. If the stain is difficult to remove, turn the powder to a paste and leave for one minute. Once you’re done, clean the cookware with warm soapy water so no residue is left behind.
White vinegar and a regular kitchen scrub brush. Pour in enough vinegar to cover the bottom of the pan and then simmer for a bit. The burnt on stuff should scrub right off. Inexpensive and completely natural. (You could also substitute fresh or bottled lemon juice.)
Add about 1/2 inch of Hydrogen Peroxide to the pot. Heat until it starts to bubble up. Simmer about 10 mins..and brush with a scrub brush. Repeat as needed. It gets into the bond of the carbon and lifts it of the pan. It will bubble and stink, so turn on your vent. But it won’t harm your pans.
Rub baked-on food with a damp magic eraser sponge and a scrub like Bar Keeper’s Friend. You can let it soak for awhile, but it’s usually not needed. Great for the exterior stains as well. Don’t use on nonstick cookware.
Bring water to a boil in the offending pan and add either a fabric softener sheet or a tablespoon of liquid fabric softener. Soak for several hours or overnight and the burnt on bits will easily wash away.
Cream of Tartar
Combine two tablespoons of cream of tartar and about a cup of water, bring to a boil, remove from the heat, and allow to cool before washing with hot, soapy water. For especially tough cases it might need to be done a second time.
Pour a thick layer of ketchup over the burnt on mess and let sit overnight. The next day you should be able to simply rinse the mess away. If you still need a little elbow grease, it won’t be much. The acid from the tomatoes eats off the burned food.
Dishwasher tablets or dishwasher powder. Throw in a tablet (or sprinkle enough powder to cover the bottom of the pan,) add hot water, and let it do its’ thing. When the water is cooled, scrub clean. A particularly bad burn might require a couple of treatments, but it works.
Fill the pan with Coca-Cola. Allow it to set in the pan for several hours, or until the food is loosened. Use a scraper to remove as much of the residue as possible, then clean with a plastic scrubber to scrub away the rest. Wash as usual. Scary that this one works so well! Yikes!
