19 Best Ways To Reuse A Plastic Bottle

I like to think I’m pretty conscientious when it comes to avoiding unnecessary waste in my home, but no matter how hard I try to avoid plastic, I always seem to end up with a few plastic bottles in my recycle bin. The average American throws away approximately 185 pounds of plastic per year, and while not all of that is plastic bottles, anything we can do to reduce our plastic waste is going to help put a dent in that number.

Recycling itself is not enough. That trip to the recycle center extends plastic’s life, but it’s still landfill bound eventually, where it won’t break down for centuriesRather than send your used plastic bottles through the waste stream, you can reuse plastic bottles in all sorts of creative, fun, and crafty ways! • In our area they have a recycling truck, one week it is paper, one week it is cans and bottles, glass or plastic. Our recycling center burns the waste and uses it for heat.
Our recycling center used to recycle lawn waste, which they, also, burned for heat.
Then, sadly, the recycle center was sold, to a greedy company, so they now charge for anything that we would bring to them, a whopping ten dollars per load. If you have acres and acres of land that would be fine as you’d have a truck and get rid of many pounds of land waste. We have 1/4 acre, thus not much in the way of garden waste.
I would not do this, but what some people will do is dump their yard waste along the road in the dark of night. This was a “no win” decision on the part of the new owners. I will try composting.

  • I’ve reused plastic water bottles in my garden torches to hold the citronella fuel. I have to look for the ones with just the right threading to fit, and eventually they degrade from the weather, but they work great as replacements for the original metal ones that rusted out.

    • I wash out plastic bottles and reuse them, just for the two of us. I’d never offer those to a guest
Our kids are grown, and have children and two have grandchildren.
You guessed it we are older than dirt, but getting older is not all that bad, IF, and it is a big IF, you have your health.

  • What an amazing collection of uses! Love it. I will say about the wasp catcher that not many people know that wasps are important pollinators, and 80 percent of the world’s flowering plants need pollination. They also keep pests that attack crops down, like aphids and blackfly. With pollinators declining all over the world, it’s great if you can just figure out how to avoid them, rather than kill them. I think most people know the importance of bees, but don’t realize the value of wasps. Thanks for this post!

    • My husband is diabetic and I have used one of the containers for ibuprophen (or any pain reliever) in my purse. It’s small and holds quite a few of them. You could also use them to hold small items such as safety pins………………Hope this was helpful…………I almost forgot please use permanent marker to label what’s in it…………….

  • Great ideas. At my house we reuse the Parmesan cheese bottles to keep baking soda, salt, certain seasonings that come
In big containers. It makes it much easier for cooking.

  • I’ve seen plastic bottles reused into hummingbird feeders too. I love the sprinkler idea. You could turn the hose on real low and make a drip irrigation system on top of the ground too. You just need to put enough bottles in a row.

    What a great post :)
