I’m really excited to share a tip about a really un-exciting topic – cleaning the toilet. It’s no one’s chore of choice, but it has to get done eventually. And if you can get it done using all-natural products and less elbow grease, even better, right? Today I’m sharing how to make a super simple and all-natural cleaning solution that will make your toilet bowl shine!
But first, let’s talk about what goes into this cleaning solution. It’s a very familiar cast of characters if you have any experience in making your own cleaning products! First, there’s my old friend white vinegar, which helps to kill bacteria and eliminate odors. Then there’s borax, which helps whiten your toilet bowl and dissolve any nasty rings that may have accumulated. The final cleaning superpower in the mix is lemon essential oil. Lemon oil contains citric acid, which is great for breaking up mineral deposits and hard water. Plus, it smells so fresh and clean!
Now that we know what we’re working with, let’s whip up a batch, shall we?
How To Make An All-Natural Toilet Cleaner
Ingredients:
1 cup white vinegar
1 cup water
1 cup borax
20 drops lemon essential oil
Directions:
Bring the water and vinegar to a boil, either on your stovetop or in a microwave-safe bowl.
Add the borax to the water and vinegar, and stir the mixture until the borax has dissolved completely. Set the mixture aside to cool.
Once the mixture is cool, add the lemon essential oil and mix well.
Using Your Toilet Cleaner
Pour the entire mixture right into your toilet bowl. Use your toilet brush to swish it around a bit, to make sure the cleaning solution gets up onto the walls of the toilet bowl. Then walk away!
Let the cleaner work overnight, then in the morning, give it a scrub with your toilet brush. Flush, and admire your squeaky clean toilet bowl! And call in your family and have them admire your squeaky clean toilet bowl, too. (Hey, when you deserve recognition, sometimes you have to ask for it!) ;-)
Is this safe for septics?
Yep!
Hello, thank you for sharing your Carpet Cleaner. But my question, why do you say “All natural” when your recipe uses Borax? Borax is not a natural product, it has many chemicals in the ingredients. I use the majority of your ideas, but when I notice a product that is not “Natural,” I bypass that it. I do not enjoy using chemicals. I avoid it as much as possible. Help!

Thank You for sharing this. Simple ingredients and easy directions, simple ,fast steps for anyone who works or has a busy life style. I was wondering if this is good for toilets with stubborn stains. For example: A friend of mine bought a house. The toilet is filthily disgusting. It looks like no one ever cleaned the inside of the toilet bowl. It had rings around it and the bowl was stained. Would this homemade product work on that type of a toilet clean up job? She has bought comet etc… Some of the rings are clearing up lightly, but the… Read more »

Seems like rather a lot of ingredients for only one cleaning. Also, gotta say it – must be nice to live in a house where nobody needs the toilet in the middle of the night! So this one won’t work for me, but I love the 2 ingredient weed killer idea, thanks!
hi jillee,
would this recipe work on colored toilet bowls or would they get discolored?
thanks.
Just leave out the lemon oil!
Thanks!!!
What an easy recipe!!! 1 cup of the three ingredients and some lemon oil or juice. Don’t even have to write that one down!! Thanks Jillee,
I have a non-pressurized toilet and the tank has rust stains inside. Would this solution be OK to put in the tank to remove those stains?
