Dressing Up Terra-Cotta Pots – A Great Mother’s Day Gift

Dressing Up Terra-Cotta Pots

Mother’s Day is coming up quickly, and we have a couple of great ideas for turning a humble terra-cotta pot into a beautiful gift (for Mom or for YOU!) Gifting flowers may be an obvious choice, but these engraved flower pots are unique, adorable, and have that hand-made element that every mom loves. :-)

Start by painting your flower pots a solid color. I used an outdoor acrylic paint, so that watering the plant won’t cause any damage. Paint at least two coats, and then let the pot dry entirely! It shouldn’t take longer than a few hours.

Once the pot is dry, grab your diamond-tip engraver and choose a design. You can use washi tape and/or painters tape to draw out a grid for polka dots, hearts, or stripes. If you’re particularly artsy, you can even free-hand a design!

When working with your engraver, don’t push down to hard and try to move quickly for a smoother line. You’ll definitely make a few mistakes, but that gives it a hand-made, rustic look! What mom doesn’t love a hand-made gift. :-)

Once your flower pots are completely decorated, plant a flower or herb to finish up.

If you’re mom doesn’t have a “green-thumb,” you could make this fun candy flower instead!

Here’s what you’ll need:

Start by separating your Skittles into groups of colors – you’ll need a pile of green candies for the “grass” and another color for your flower.

Set aside the green candies and put your flower-colored candies in the baggie. Cut the zip-top off of the bag and cut an inch or two off of the side.

Tape the baggie back together, creating a square pouch.

Now grab the string and tie the bag around the center. Once the knot is secure, turn the bag and tie another string around the center – creating four equal segments.

Use the remaining ends of string to attach the skewer stem, and secure it with a piece of tape. I painted my skewer green, but that step is optional.

Carve your flower foam into a shape that will fit in your flower pot. You might be able to skip this step if you buy the perfect sized foam block.

Now attach your Starburst candy to the center of the flower, and stick the skewer into the foam.

Finish up by topping the foam with green candies – and don’t eat these ones!

There you have it – the perfect mother’s day gift for any mom! It’s cute, useful and mom can keep it around for years to come.
