How To Make Giant Christmas Ornaments

Follow this super simple tutorial to make your own giant Christmas decorations. To go beyond the classic ornament look, I’ve included some additional decoration ideas near the bottom of this post for creative inspiration!

All you need To Make DIY Giant Christmas Ornaments is inflatable balls and a few craft supplies like glue and paint.

You’ll need:

*If you can’t find a toy ball in red, green, silver, etc., you could always use spray paint to get the effect you’re looking for!

Directions:

Start by using spray paint to paint the ball(s) your desired color — you may need to apply a few thin coats to get complete coverage. (If the ball is already a suitable color, proceed to the next step!)

Spray paint an empty sour cream container to make the top of your giant ornament.

Next, use silver paint to cover the outside of an empty plastic container or cup, then allow the paint to dry completely. Once dry, poke or drill two small holes (one on each side) near the base of the container.

A couple of slits in your spray painted container will let you thread a wire through so you can hang your giant ornament.

Feed a length of wire through the holes, then tie or bend it to form a small, closed loop.

Run a bead of silicone glue along the edge of the sour cream container to glue it to the ornament.

Position the rim of the container against the surface of the ball, then attach the cap using a waterproof silicone glue or sealant. Allow the glue to dry for several hours, or overnight to make sure the bond is secure.

It's amazing how easy these giant ornaments are to make!

Tip: You can position the container over a part of the ball you want to cover up, like a barcode or air valve.

Hang a few of your DIY giant ornaments in front of a window for loads of Christmas cheer.

When you’re ready to hang your oversized Christmas ornaments, you can use the leftover wire as “ribbon” to hang them from tree branches. To hang them on eaves or front porches, use cup hooks to hang them at various heights near your front door. (You could even hang your DIY Christmas ornaments in a window as a festive display, loop garland along your eaves and hang an ornament between each loop — the possibilities are endless!)

More Ways To Decorate DIY Large Christmas Ornaments

  • Check your local dollar store for play balls. (They don’t all have to be the same size or color!)
  • If you can’t find play balls, beach balls would probably work just fine.
  • Use painter’s tape and contrasting paints to create horizontal or vertical stripes.
  • Use a stencil to add a holiday message or design to your ornaments.
  • If you’re handy with a paint brush, use gold and black paints to turn your ornaments into giant jingle bells.
  • Add some serious sparkle with spray adhesive and craft glitter.
