8 Of The Most Useful Hot Weather Clothing Hacks

Growing up in Southern California instilled in me a lifelong love of hot weather. Although living in Utah for the past 30 or so years has taught me that all four seasons have something to offer, Iโ€™d be lying if I said I donโ€™t secretly pine for summer all year long.

clothing hacks for hot weather

Give me a 90-degree day and a shady tree to sit under, and Iโ€™m as content as can be! :-) On the other hand, if itโ€™s that warm out and Iโ€™m running errands all day, or spending time outdoors WITHOUT said shady tree, itโ€™s sure to send me running for the A/C!

Hot temperatures and relentless sunshine are prime conditions for sweating, chafing, blisters, and other forms of summertime discomfort. Iโ€™m sharing some of my favorite tips and hacks for dressing comfortably in hot weather to help us all keep our cool for as long as summer sticks around!

8 Clothing Hacks That Will Keep You Comfortable In Hot Weather

1. Prevent Underarm Sweat Spots

Few wardrobe malfunctions make people more self-conscious than dark underarm sweat stains on their clothes, especially when they coincide with a special outdoor event! Happily, there is a quick trick you can use to avoid such embarrassment.

Grab a couple of feminine hygiene panty liners and attach them to the armpit area inside of each sleeve. The adhesive will keep the liner securely in place so it can absorb excess sweat and prevent sweaty pits!

You can also purchase underarm pads (sometimes called โ€œdress shieldsโ€ or โ€œgarment guardsโ€) online, but panty liners work just as well if you already have some on hand!

2. Erase Deodorant Marks

Dryer sheets have loads of uses outside the laundry room! Keep dryer sheets handy to erase white, chalky deodorant marks from your darker clothing. The dryer sheets will pick up the excess deodorant and wonโ€™t harm delicate fabrics in the process.

3. Avoid Inner Thigh Chafing

With increased sweat and friction this time of year, weโ€™re even more susceptible to the nightmare of chafed skin. But instead of buying expensive and sweat-inducing shapewear or bike shorts to wear under your summer dresses, cut the legs off an old pair of tights so they end about halfway down your thighs.

The light material will keep you cool and eliminate chafing. And if you happen to have a pair of tights on hand with a run or hole in them, this is a great way to repurpose them!

4. DIY A Cooling Pair Of Cut-Offs

And speaking of repurposing, you can repurpose an old pair of jeans by turning them into customized cut-off shorts! Theyโ€™ll keep you much cooler than your long pants, making them perfect for summertime and hot weather.

And when you make them yourself out of old jeans, you can choose the exact length you want!

5. Embrace Light Colored Clothing

Dark-colored fabrics get hotter since they absorb more light from the environment. So if youโ€™re trying to stay cool, wearing light-colored clothing can help keep you feeling comfortable.

In addition to dark clothing, avoid tight clothing and heavy fabrics during hot weather too. Loose clothing will let your skin breathe and help keep you cooler.

6. Secure Your Bra Straps

Want to stop those sneaky bra straps from peeking out from under your favorite summer tops and dresses? Many bras have a built-in hook on the straps you can use to keep them out of sight!

7. Fix Slippery Sunglasses

When youโ€™re sweaty and your makeup is virtually melting off your face, keeping your sunglasses or eyeglasses on can become an impossible task! Apply a bit of hot glue to the end of each arm of your frames to help your sunglasses stay put on your โ€œglowingโ€ face. ;-)

8. No More Blisters

Blisters are especially common during the summer because the higher temperatures make us sweat more, and if your shoes are even a bit too tight, the friction will only make matters worse. Instead of patching yourself up after the blisters have already formed, stretching out your shoes may help you avoid those blisters entirely!

Whatโ€™s your best tip for staying cool in hot weather?

  1. I really need to use those pads under my bra. Here in South Carolina it not only is hot but it is extremely humid. I sweat under there, also. I’ve even used Gold Bond powder. Thank goodness we have a pool at our apartment complex.

  2. For chafing, I use Chafing Relief Powder Gel from Monistat. Side hack from beauty gurus for the stuff (that I have been doing for YEARS): you can use it as a makeup primer, no joke, it’s that gentle!

  3. Wear strapless bras with T-shirts and sleeveless dresses. Stops all that slipping of bra straps that happens all to frequently.

    • Good idea.,That just drives me nuts. Ladies wearing sleeveless tops with their bra straps and everything hanging out. One of my pet peeves. How hard is it to just buy the right bras.

      • A/C always feels great. But add a fan… heaven!

  4. Number 7 made me smile. “ Apply a bit of hot glue to the end of each arm of your frames to help your sunglasses stay put” – I know exactly what you mean, but anyone reading it quickly might think you were suggesting people glue their sunglasses to their face to keep them in place!

  5. I learned a long time ago to take cool showers in the summer. Not only is it refreshing, it keeps the bathroom and bedroom cool.

  6. Slip shorts are fairly inexpensive and over time would be cheaper than cutting off panty hose. I have some by Vanity Fair and Jockey, but prefer the Vanity Fair ones. They are light, cool and comfortable, stop chaffing, and give me some extra coverage on a breezy day if I’m wearing a dress the wind could lift. I got some of mine from Walmart, but Amazon sells them too. In the stores look near the half slips and camisoles. They are not the shapewear shorts. They look and feel like the microfiber underwear with spandex. Not constricting, just close fitting and really stretchy.

    • I also saw some thigh bands on Amazon that aren’t even a full coverage thing. They are a microfiber band that is about 3-4″ long and slips on each thigh (kind of like the old fashioned garters did) Thinking about buying some of those since I like cotton underwear in the summer.

    • Doctor told me to buy mens boxer briefs. Even in jeans in the heat at work I feel so much dryer. It doesn’t make me feel hotter at all.

  7. I use a solid antiperspirant rolled on the inside of my thighs to control the chafing in warm weather.

  8. Great ideas. One thing I do when the hot weather hits is I take half a Zinc tablet everyday. Iโ€™ve been doing this for a few years . I tend to sweat like crazy in hot weather and this really helps me out. Our bodies donโ€™t produce as much zinc in warmer weather which contributes to the excess sweating. I love the clothing hacks. I also line my bra with Kleenex in the warmer weather. This helps with the excess sweat so I donโ€™t have to wash my bra as much.

    • Baby powder is also great to help out with the stickiness and sweating in summertime. I just use the kind without talc.
