It amazes me how sometimes the best ideas are the most obvious ones! Let me start by saying that I am one of those people who HAS to have hand soap next to the sink, even in the kitchen. I’ve tried to break myself of the habit a couple of different times, because I could just use the dish soap to wash my hands when I’m in the kitchen, but I just can’t do it! Dish soap just doesn’t cut it for me, because it tends to leave my hands feeling dry and scaly, and it drives me crazy. I’ve even tried replacing it with bar soap which is considerably cheaper, and has less packaging, but it just doesn’t do it for me. It seems I just can break my foaming hand soap habit.
So since I can’t seem to break the habit, the next logical step in my mind was to figure out how to make my OWN version, which is now the only thing we use. Since I wanted to avoid drying out the skin on my hands, I added some fractionated coconut oil into the mix for a boost of extra moisturizing power, as well as some essential oils to make it antibacterial. The result is a homemade foaming hand soap that gets you hands clean, but is also kind to your skin! Here’s how to make your own hand soap at home.
Homemade Coconut Oil Foaming Hand Soap
- 1 foaming soap dispenser
- 2 Tbsp unscented castile soap
- 1–2 tsp fractionated coconut oil
- 10–15 drops essential oil(s) of choice
Next, add your essential oil(s) of choice. I used the Defend blend from my shop, a great protective blend based on the “Thieves Oil” recipe of ancient times. It’s perfect for a hand soap because it combines several oils with antibacterial properties, including lemon, eucalyptus, and rosemary oils. You could use other antibacterial essential oils too, like tea tree, sweet orange, lavender, or peppermint. Whatever you like best!
After adding the oils, fill the soap bottle the rest of the way with water.
Screw on the pump top and shake gently to mix the ingredients together.
To use your soap, pump the desired amount into your hands and wash them under warm water.
Overall, I’m very pleased with this hand soap formula. The addition of the fractionated coconut oil moisturizes my hand, rather than drying them out like most other soaps do. And the antibacterial essential oils smell great, plus I have peace of mind knowing that my hands are getting properly clean!
