I’ve emphasized homemade solutions and DIYs here on my blog for years, but thanks to the feedback from my wonderful readers, I’ve realized that homemade solutions aren’t always appropriate for everyone. Whether it’s due to limited resources or lack of mobility, some people can’t find the supplies necessary to make everything at home. But I don’t want anyone to feel left out, so since the beginning of the year, I’ve been making more of a concerted effort to share some of the best store-bought products I own. (“Everything in moderation,” as they say, “including moderation!”)
In the past few months I’ve shared some of my favorite makeup products, my favorite food storage containers, and the best sheets I’ve ever slept on. And speaking of sleeping, today we’ll be talking about another product that has helped improve my quality of sleep significantly! I never would have guessed it before trying it for myself, but this one little addition to my bed has totally changed the way I sleep: a knee pillow! But before we get into the pillow itself, let’s talk about sleep issues (including the ones I was facing just a few months ago.)
The Problem(s) With Sleeping On Your Side
Sleeping on your side is believed to be one of the more common sleep positions. The U.K. Sleep Assessment and Advisory Service conducted a survey of about 1,000 people, and about 41% reported that they primarily sleep on their side. So while a lot of people find it more comfortable to sleep on their side than either their back or stomach, it isn’t a flawless solution.
Sleeping on your side can pull your hips and spine out of alignment, and eventually lead to achy hips and backs. It’s not uncommon for side sleepers to report experiencing back pain, which is exactly what I was experiencing too. It was doubly frustrating, because I have a good supportive mattress that I got just last year! But not even a great mattress can fix your spinal alignment when you sleep on your side, so I knew I needed to find a solution.
Failed Attempts To Fix The Problem
I suspected that my hips being out of alignment was contributing to my back pain, so I figured that putting something between my legs to help stabilize my hips would help. I tried a regular pillow first, but it wasn’t supportive enough to help all that much. So I tried a bigger pillow next (a body pillow to be specific), but that didn’t work either. It took up too much space in my bed, and made me too hot at night too. But finally, I found the pillow I had been looking for!
Finally, The Solution To My Side-Sleeping Issues!
After these failed attempts, I finally decided to search for a dedicated knee pillow for side sleepers. I found this knee pillow from Everlasting Comfort on Amazon and decided to give it a try. (It’s only $20 after all!) But it turned out to be well worth the money, and I’ve been kicking myself for not trying something like this sooner!
This knee pillow is made out of 100% memory foam, a firm material that provides the perfect amount of support. It has a curved, ergonomic design that fits snugly between my legs. It also has a removable strap you can use to help keep it in place if you tend to move around a lot in your sleep! This is the only pillow I have tried that has provided enough support to truly keep my hips and legs aligned while I sleep.
After several months of using this knee pillow, I can confidently say that it has been one of the best investments I could have made for my sleep. Waking up with back pain is rare now, instead of an everyday occurrence. My husband eventually decided he needed one too and feels the same way I do about it! The pillow itself has also kept it shape well, so I know that it’s going to last for a long time to come!
If you sleep on your side and have been waking up with hip or back pain, I highly recommend giving a knee pillow like this a try. It’s a pretty inexpensive solution, and once you know how much of a difference it can make, you’ll be kicking yourself for not getting one sooner!
