As you may already know, I love finding ways to reuse things around my home. There are so many items we buy every day that can be reused in a new and useful way. I’ve explored ways to reuse cereal boxes, plastic containers, prescription bottles, glass jars, dryer sheets, and old sweaters (just to name a few!) so I decided it was high time for a new subject!
Did you know it takes approximately 50 times more water to recycle cardboard than it does to recycle plastic? Recycling cardboard requires massive amounts of water and energy in order de-ink, bleach, re-pulp, and breakdown the paper. So even though recycling is still a better option than simply tossing it in the landfill….today I’m sharing several useful ways you can REUSE cardboard tubes (like paper towel and toilet paper rolls) around the house!
Organize your desk supplies
Keep your office supplies organized and handy with a DIY desk organizer. Cut cardboard tubes to different lengths so that the front doesn’t block the back, and secure the tubes in a square or rectangle box. Decorate with scrapbook paper and washi tape to your heart’s content!
Avoid creases on pants
A paper towel roll can also help keep your slacks wrinkle-free! Cut the roll down the length, place around the bottom of your hanger, then tape the roll back together to secure. Place your slacks over the paper towel, which will keep them from creasing where they lay over the hanger.
Keep wrapping paper from unrolling
Cut a paper towel roll along the length, then place the roll over a roll of wrapping paper after using it. The cardboard will keep the wrapping paper from unrolling without having to use tape!
Store nice dinner napkins
If you have nice cloth dinner napkins that you keep for special occasions, you can keep them wrinkle-free and ready to go using a paper towel! Just put your cloth napkins in a stack, roll them around the paper towel roll, and store until needed.
Make starting a fire a cinch
A toilet paper roll can be turned into a great firestarter! Simply fill the tube with some lint from your clothes dryer, then roll the tube in some paper (newspaper works great for this!) After rolling, stuff the ends of the paper into the tube, and you’re ready to start your bonfire!
Store your cables and cords
A cardboard tube can keep your cords from becoming a tangled mess. Label the tubes for easy identification! Click here to read my whole post on about simple DIY organizers.
Make a simple cat toy

Make a backyard bird feeder

Store your plastic bags
Contain your collection of plastic grocery bags by stuffing them into a paper towel tube one at a time. They’ll take up less space and they’re easy to grab out of the tube when you need one. You can do the same thing with a toilet paper roll to keep in the car, so that you’ll always have a plastic bag handy if you need a “trash can” while you’re driving! Photo from Real Simple.
Of course in addition to finding new uses for cardboard tubes around the house…there are probably a million and one ways to use them in crafts! Check out Pinterest for more cardboard tube crafts than you can shake a glue stick at! :-)
