Nesquik has been around for as long as I can remember. I remember drinking it as a kid and my kids drank it when they were small as well. It can be a “parent’s best friend” when they are desperately trying to get their kids to drink milk — ANY milk.
Unfortunately, chocolate milk has been under siege the last few years by people complaining of too much sugar. I’m not encouraging the drinking of chocolate milk on a regular basis, but for an occasional treat it’s a pretty good choice as far as “snack foods” go, especially when you consider studies that show a three-fourths of teens suffer from calcium deficiency.
And if you’re making your own out of 3 simple ingredients you probably already have in your pantry, you know exactly what you’re drinking.
(If you’re looking for a delicious chocolate drink you can serve hot, try my crockpot hot chocolate recipe, semi-homemade hot chocolate mix, or fun and yummy hot chocolate bombs!)

So here’s to a chocolate milk comeback! (within reason) :-)
Homemade Nesquik Recipe
- 2/3 C Sugar
- 1/3 C Cocoa
- Pinch of salt
Combine the three ingredients and store in a sealed container. That’s it! Crazy easy huh?? (I ended up tripling the recipe because I knew the single batch wasn’t going to last long in this house!)
FYI…I added about two tablespoons to this pint-sized mason jar…but I would add to your taste. I found you need a lot less than the commercial stuff!

Thanks to Sarah at Sugar Bananas for sharing this homemade version of a childhood favorite and for sharing a great tip for getting it to dissolve all the way in the cold milk.
One of the drawbacks to making chocolate milk with Nesquik is getting a smooth consistency. The powder tends to not want to “melt” in cold milk. (Pet Peeve #487). Sarah suggests putting a little bit of hot water (I just got it from the tap) in the bottom of a cup, adding the powder, swirling it or stirring it for a few seconds, and then adding the cold milk.

So I gave it a go and it worked brilliantly! Result: perfectly smooth, creamy and cold chocolate milk made from scratch!

Had No. 2 son give it a taste test and he gave it a very positive review! (Especially the “smooth” part.) Then decided to do a taste test of my own — cuz momma needs a treat every now and then too! :-)

I also gave it two thumbs up! Really tasty! Of course it would also make a good hot cocoa — but I refuse to think about winter yet! :-)

Thank you so much for sharing this! My son loves chocolate milk and I went to buy him Nesquik a few weeks back and when I looked at the ingredients, I just couldn’t do it. My husband and sons will all be very happy about this!

Thanks for sharing your recipe.
However, I can’t help but mention pet peeve #488:
The powdered mix does not “melt” into the milk; it dissolves. ;)

Use equal parts “Nesquik” mix and nonfat powdered milk.
Some replace a quarter of the milk with powdered Coffeemate.
For an interesting twist, a little instant coffee is very good.

Thanks for the recipe! My kids drink crazy amounts of ovaltine which has white sugar and artificial coloring and preservatives. I did NOT save money making this. I bought organic raw sugar and organic raw cacao ($13 /1 lb ouch). It was so delicious and a little bit goes a long way!

What about a plastic container/

Another thing I did was add food coloring to my home made bread. I’d take out part of the ‘sponge stage’ to color, and they brought sandwiches of pink, yellow, blue and green to school.
Just thought I’d share – this was in the 60’s

Please log in or create a free account to comment.I suggest whirring that lovely mixture up in a food processor for a bit…. it makes the parts very small which makes them easier to dissolve in your liquid. In fact you might not need to add the hot water to dissolve it…

For everyone who is wondering if it has less sugar than nesquik; it definitely does. I did the math, and Nesquick containers that are ~19 servings has ~1 1/3 cups of sugar in it. And this is for the 25% less sugar kind! This recipe on has 2/3c for ~ 16 servings. Plus you know all of the ingredients going in a homemade recipe.

Mostly not awful on the outside, and killed by the detergents and soaps that we used to clean ourselves. However, ingesting it can sometimes cause really upset stomachs if you are in a reduced immunity condition, which all of us are at some points. Better to heat the water on the stove, and if you are in a hurry use a microwave (I’m not sure how safe those are, lol.) I use my clean electric pot.

Nesquik 300g = £1.95
Homemade (with Hershey’s cocoa) = £0.99
Sometimes I’m extremely curious how much exactly I can save ;)
