Nesquik has been around for as long as I can remember. I remember drinking it as a kid and my kids drank it when they were small as well. It can be a “parent’s best friend” when they are desperately trying to get their kids to drink milk — ANY milk.
Unfortunately, chocolate milk has been under siege the last few years by people complaining of too much sugar. I’m not encouraging the drinking of chocolate milk on a regular basis, but for an occasional treat it’s a pretty good choice as far as “snack foods” go, especially when you consider studies that show a three-fourths of teens suffer from calcium deficiency.
And if you’re making your own out of 3 simple ingredients you probably already have in your pantry, you know exactly what you’re drinking.
(If you’re looking for a delicious chocolate drink you can serve hot, try my crockpot hot chocolate recipe, semi-homemade hot chocolate mix, or fun and yummy hot chocolate bombs!)

So here’s to a chocolate milk comeback! (within reason) :-)
Homemade Nesquik Recipe
- 2/3 C Sugar
- 1/3 C Cocoa
- Pinch of salt
Combine the three ingredients and store in a sealed container. That’s it! Crazy easy huh?? (I ended up tripling the recipe because I knew the single batch wasn’t going to last long in this house!)
FYI…I added about two tablespoons to this pint-sized mason jar…but I would add to your taste. I found you need a lot less than the commercial stuff!

Thanks to Sarah at Sugar Bananas for sharing this homemade version of a childhood favorite and for sharing a great tip for getting it to dissolve all the way in the cold milk.
One of the drawbacks to making chocolate milk with Nesquik is getting a smooth consistency. The powder tends to not want to “melt” in cold milk. (Pet Peeve #487). Sarah suggests putting a little bit of hot water (I just got it from the tap) in the bottom of a cup, adding the powder, swirling it or stirring it for a few seconds, and then adding the cold milk.

So I gave it a go and it worked brilliantly! Result: perfectly smooth, creamy and cold chocolate milk made from scratch!

Had No. 2 son give it a taste test and he gave it a very positive review! (Especially the “smooth” part.) Then decided to do a taste test of my own — cuz momma needs a treat every now and then too! :-)

I also gave it two thumbs up! Really tasty! Of course it would also make a good hot cocoa — but I refuse to think about winter yet! :-)

I’m really curious about Calcium and it’s affects in an American diet, do you have any references for the fact you stated that 3/4 of teens suffer from calcium deficiency? Thanks!
Great recipe :) That’s my favorite way to make hot chocolate too, although I often will leave out much of the sugar since I prefer my drinks not very sweet.

I just add a couple drops of milk at a time, stirring it up until it’s a syrupy consistency, then add the rest of the milk slowly while stirring, works great every time and its not “watered” down.

Take out 1/4 up of sugar, then add a small amount, about a tablespoon, of French Vanilla coffee creamer (such as “International Delight” or “Coffee Mate”) to the cold milk. Adds vanilla flavor and makes chocolate milk extra creamy!

Please log in or create a free account to comment. Thanks for sharing!! Definitely going to try it just as soon as I run out of the Nesquik I just bought. :-)
Please log in or create a free account to comment. Thanks, Jillee for this recipe. I just received an email from Nesquick regarding a recall. Initial panic hit, but relief soon came as I realized I had made my own via your recipe! My boys love it, Thanks!
Please log in or create a free account to comment. But the “lumps” are the best part of nesquik. You have to put in extra so it floats on the top and makes chocolate lumps.

Please log in or create a free account to comment.I just made this and YUMMY! I blended my dry mix up in my Vitamix to get a finer powder hoping it would dissolve easier in the cold milk. It didn’t. lol However, doing the tiny amount of hot water at the bottom of my mug and dissolving the mix in that first worked perfectly. It’s a little more work but definitely worth it not to have all the “junk” that’s in the commercial mixes. My 3 yr. old is happily sipping away and so am I! Thanks so much for sharing!
Please log in or create a free account to comment.Dang, I just gave this a try and I definitely didn’t have success dissolving this for cold chocolate milk. I even tried the hot water method for my second cup. I still had chunks of cocoa floating around and sugar in the bottom. I’m sure I’ll have better luck making hot chocolate with the rest of my batch. Maybe the problem is that my husband is an Ovaltine snob and therefore I’ve become an Ovaltine snob. That powder just melts into cold milk without even stirring. Mmmm… good stuff. Now if only it wasn’t so expensive! :)

Please log in or create a free account to comment. This is the best nesquik and hot cocoa mix ever!! I ground the sugar, cocoa and salt in a food processor like someone else mentioned and it works fabulously. I’ve also tried it for a hot cocoa mix and love it… 1 mug of warm milk & mix in 3 tablespoons of the mix plus a splash of vanilla extract and voila! Homemade 1 mug hot cocoa! Thank you SO MUCH for sharing this recipe!
Please log in or create a free account to comment.I do find it necessary to mix the powder with a tiny bit of hot water first, if making cold chocolate milk. And I tried adding 1/3 cup of powdered non-dairy creamer and found that it had a little more of that ‘Nesquik’ taste that I was looking for. Love how easy and cheap this is – definitely won’t be buying Nesquik anymore!
Please log in or create a free account to comment.I have made this with xylitol and it’s great. It’s also a good way to slowly introduce xylitol into your body so that you get used to it and can use it on a regular basis without “stomach/bowel” issues. I never had that reaction from xylitol. I want to try making it with stevia and erythritol next. Has anyone tried making this in the hot cocoa version with water instead of milk? I know, not as creamy good but I do like hot chocolate sometimes with water, especially when on a diet or watching calorie intake. Might have to try that too…

also, love the quilt squares
Please log in or create a free account to comment.Wonderful. It’s my pm hot chocolate. You can change the deepth of chocolate flavor by the type of cocco used. Too bad about the calcium…… “Forget about it!…..” Take a sublingual supplement. :)

This is wonderful, thank you!
Please log in or create a free account to comment.I’m going to use this in replace of the Nesquik in the hot chocolate recipe. Is it sad that I’m already thinking about Christmas gifts???
Please log in or create a free account to comment.Shhhh Cassie! Please don’t say that word just yet! I refuse to think about “that” until at least October. :))
Please log in or create a free account to comment.I just tried this and my very picky 11 year old loved it … claimed it was better than Nestle or Hershey’s. :)
I did add a tiny bit of hot tap water to dissolve before adding the milk, and had no issue with it not mixing or any settling to the bottom.
Thank you!!
Please log in or create a free account to comment.Oh my goodness this is going to save me some money. I make homemade hot cocoa mix and it calls for the Nesquik. My kids go through the hot cocoa mix so fast this is going to make my life so much easier. Thank you tons.
Please log in or create a free account to comment.YUM! Just made this (While the kids are in school).. Tried the hot water in the bottom of my cup (worked perfectly) added about 1 1/2 tbsp of mix to my mason glass stirred it into the hot water and then topped it with cold milk. This is delicious! SO much cheaper than buying cocoa or nesquick from the store! I am only made 1 batch to make sure we would like it but if I love it this much I know my kids will as well. Thank you!
