New Year’s has always been a favorite holiday of mine. At the start of a new year, it feels like almost anything is possible! It’s a great time to dream about the coming months, and make plans to turn those dreams into reality. But New Year’s isn’t just about the future – it’s also about the past. I always try to find some quiet time to reflect on the past year, and all of the good and bad things that came along with it. I find that reflecting on the past year actually helps me visualize what I want to get out of the year ahead.
With those things in mind, I wanted to share some fun ways that you and your loved ones can infuse a bit of mindfulness into your New Year’s festivities, starting with a true classic – making a vision board! Vision boards are a great way to creatively express your “vision” the coming year, and you can look at them all year long as a reminder of the goals you set for yourself. Here’s how to do it:
How to Make a 2017 Vision Board
- Paper or poster board
- Old magazines
- Tape or glue
- Frame (optional)
Start by jotting down a few thoughts about what you want to do in 2017. Do you want to get organized, or eat healthier, or read more? Or maybe you want to practice expressing gratitude, or reconnect with old friends. Whatever you want to do or work on, jot it down.
Next, flip through a stack of old magazines, keeping an eye out for words, phrases, or images that capture the spirit of the things you wrote down. If it speaks to you, cut it out with your scissors.
When you have a good pile of clippings to work with, start creating your vision board! You can glue each piece down one at a time, arranging them as you go, or you can arrange them first, and then glue them all down. Whatever works for you!
Finally, show off your vision boards! Go around and have everyone show their boards and talk about what it means to them.
Afterwards, put it in a pretty frame and display it where you’ll see it frequently. Each time you see it, you’ll be reminded of the kind of year you set out to have.
Here are even more ways to mindfully ring in the new year! I tried to include a good mix of ways to reflect and ways to look forward, as well as a mix of activities that are appropriate for kids or for adults. Hopefully you’ll find something that inspires you to take a quiet moment of mindfulness within the next few days. :-) (And P.S., there are a lot of free printables hiding behind these links, so make sure click on the bolded titles to visit those sites!)
