Does the constant battle against soap scum and hard water spots on your shower doors leave you frustrated? I know the feeling all too well. You spend forever scrubbing your shower clean, only to watch those beautiful surfaces cloud up again within days.
For years, I relied on a squeegee to maintain my glass shower doors after my bathroom remodel. It helped, but never quite enough—I was still fighting stubborn buildup every week. Then I discovered a game-changing solution that’s been hiding in plain sight in my linen closet.
One of my readers, Donna, gave me the breakthrough tip: “These towels are good-sized and soft. They do a great job of wiping down the shower walls after showering to minimize soap and hard-water buildup.”
She was talking about microfiber cloths—and this simple switch from squeegee to microfiber has revolutionized my shower cleaning routine. Today, I’m sharing this revelation that could save you hours of scrubbing and keep your shower sparkling clean with minimal effort!

Why Wiping Down Your Shower Matters
Wiping down your shower after each use is one of the easiest ways to keep it looking clean and prevent that dreaded soap scum and hard water buildup. When you leave moisture, soap residue, and minerals sitting on surfaces—whether it’s glass, tile, or fiberglass—they start to cling, harden, and turn into tough-to-remove grime.
This simple daily habit helps protect your shower from stains, streaks, mildew, and long-term damage. And no, it’s not just for glass doors! Tile walls, plastic surrounds, and even shower floors can all benefit from a quick dry-off, making your weekly cleaning routine so much faster and easier.

Why Microfiber Works Better Than a Squeegee
What makes microfiber so effective? It’s all about its incredible absorbency, holding up to 6 times its weight in water. This means a single cloth can handle your entire shower area without missing a spot.
Unlike squeegees that just push water around, microfiber cloths actually:
- Absorb water completely rather than just moving it elsewhere
- Clean while they dry, picking up tiny particles of soap residue and minerals
- Work on every surface, including textured tile, grout lines, and curved areas
- Prevent streaks and drips by trapping water instead of pushing it down into a puddle
- Save time by cleaning and drying in one simple step
As someone who’s tried both methods for years, I can tell you the difference is night and day. The squeegee helped, but microfiber completely transformed my routine.
Judith M. shared her experience: “We have been using a squeegee in the shower for years. Your use of the waffle weave microfiber towels to wipe down shower walls was an ah-haw moment for me. Even my husband was impressed with how much faster and dryer the towels made that chore.”
Shirley M., another microfiber enthusiast, recounts her experience: “I read your suggestion to use these cloths to wipe down a shower. I bought them and tried one out the next morning. I could not have been more pleased. They sure do the trick!”

Already Have Soap Scum Buildup?
If you’re starting with a shower that already has stubborn soap scum, here’s my favorite DIY cleaner to tackle it before you begin your microfiber maintenance routine:
Combine equal amounts of Dawn dish soap and warm white vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray liberally around your shower and tub. Let it sit for 30-60 minutes. Scrub with a brush to break up any lingering grime. Rinse thoroughly.
Just make sure your bathroom is well-ventilated—it’s potent, but the vinegar smell dissipates quickly after rinsing!

Not A Fan Of Daily Wiping? Try This Instead
If wiping down your shower walls feels like too much, try a daily shower spray instead!
In a 16 oz amber spray bottle (to protect the hydrogen peroxide from breaking down) combine 1/3 cup hydrogen peroxide, 1/3 cup rubbing alcohol, 1/2 tsp dish soap, 1 tbsp dishwasher rinse aid, and 1 1/3 cups water. After showering, simply spray on damp walls and walk away—no wiping needed!
