The One Thing That Helped Fade My Dark Spots (After Years in the Sun)

A woman with long blonde hair and a floral blouse gently touches her neck while looking in the mirror, admiring her radiant skinโ€”perhaps thanks to vitamin Cโ€”in both front and side profiles.

Back when I was growing up in sunny California, protecting our skin from the sun was not high on our list of priorities โ€” in fact, the opposite was true! My friends and I spent considerable time maintaining our suntans, and now my carefree youth has come back to haunt me in the form of sun spots and age spots.

Regardless of our ethnicity or skin color, most people develop some kind of dark spots on their skin over time. Theyโ€™re mostly harmless (unless theyโ€™re cancerous or pre-cancerous, which is why itโ€™s important to get checked for skin cancer), but that doesnโ€™t mean we like them.

In fact, a while back, I asked you about your biggest concerns when it comes to your aging skin, and dark spots were clearly the leading concern. But I have a solution to tell you about today that we can all benefit from.

My Secret Weapon For Dark Spots: Vitamin C

If dark spots and hyperpigmentation are troubling you, look no further than my Illuminating Vitamin C Serum. The natural antioxidant properties of vitamin C not only nourish skin but also help to reduce the appearance of dark spots and uneven coloring over time.

Iโ€™ve been using this vitamin C serum regularly for more than five years at this point, and Iโ€™ve seen significant improvement in my own age and sun spots.

How Vitamin C Benefits Your Skin

Vitamin C serums are a proven way to fade hyperpigmentation and age spots, according to a prominent dermatology journal. They can also hydrate and brighten your skin, and even reduce the appearance of under-eye circles.

Given how sensitive my own skin is, I knew I needed to find a serum that wasnโ€™t harsh or irritating, and thatโ€™s exactly what I found with this Illuminating Vitamin C Serum. Itโ€™s made with a particularly gentle form of vitamin C called sodium ascorbyl phosphate, along with soothing chamomile and orange peel extractsโ€”and yes, it smells wonderful too!

But gentle doesnโ€™t mean ineffectiveโ€”this serum is an antioxidant powerhouse formulated to improve the look of skin tone. Regular use can help nourish skin and reduce the appearance of age spots, uneven skin tone, and fine lines. And as an added bonus, vitamin C also helps support natural collagen production.

How To Use My Illuminating Vitamin C Serum

1. Apply It In The Morning

This serum is best applied in the morning to clean, dry skin, before applying moisturizer. By putting it on first thing, you can reap its antioxidant benefits throughout the day to combat free radicals from sun exposure, pollution, and so on.

Apply two pumps of the serum to your fingertips and gently massage it into your skin before applying a moisturizer. And donโ€™t forget to follow up with a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least an SPF 30 afterward!

2. You Donโ€™t Have To Stop At Your Face

If youโ€™re concerned about age spots on your neck and chest, you can apply your vitamin C serum to those areas as well.

3. Start Slowly

While this serum uses a gentler form of vitamin C than others do, if you have really sensitive skin, youโ€™ll still want to ease into using it to avoid irritation. The best approach is to use it once or twice a week at first, then gradually increase the frequency if your skin is tolerating it well.

The goal is to eventually work up to using it every day for best resultsโ€”but everyoneโ€™s skin is different, so itโ€™s always best to listen to yours!

4. Donโ€™t Use With Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide is a common ingredient in acne products, so this may or may not apply to you, but you should steer clear of using benzoyl peroxide and vitamin C at the same time. The acne-fighter can oxidize vitamin C and make it less potent, which defeats the purpose of putting it on.

You can still use benzoyl peroxide products as long as itโ€™s not at the same time as youโ€™re applying your vitamin C serum. One option is to apply your vitamin C serum in the morning and benzoyl peroxide in the evening, or use them on alternating days.

5. A Little Goes a Long Way

Serums are formulated to deliver a highly concentrated dose of active ingredients to the skin to achieve a desired result. Theyโ€™re lighter and thinner than cleansers or moisturizers, and they penetrate deeply into the skinโ€”as opposed to moisturizers, for example, which only penetrate the top layer of skin.

Because serums contain a much higher concentration of active ingredients, a little goes a long way. But thatโ€™s a good thing, because using a small amount means the bottle will last you a while!

Adding my Illuminating Vitamin C Serum to your skincare routine can help restore brightness and radiance to your skin over time. And on top of that, the citrus aroma of this serum acts like an instant energy boost in the morningโ€”I never feel completely โ€œdressedโ€ until I put it on.

But donโ€™t take just my word for it โ€” hereโ€™s what readers who have tried the Illuminating Vitamin C Serum have been saying about it so far:

I. Love. This. Stuff. I’ve never tried vitamin C serum before, but it was recommended to fade an age spot I’ve got on my cheek. It hasn’t had time for that yet, but I’ve seen improvement in the texture of my skin in only two weeks!

Cynthia T.

This serum is wonderful and changed my skin in one week. Diminished red spots, helped my rosacea, left my skin soft and smells wonderful. Highly recommend.

Cecilia B.ย

This is medicine for my skin. It makes my skin soft and helps with fine lines, wrinkles, and my age spots! My skin just drinks this up!

Patricia H.

I bought this serum for the age spots on my hands. Iโ€™m already seeing a fading and better texture on my hands.

Brenda P.

I have a couple of darker spots on my cheek due to too much sun, and I have been faithfully applying vitamin C serum to the area for several months. I have seen them slowly fading. A good product. I like the full skincare line also!

    • Vitamin C serum will last 3-4 months. You can tell if it’s gone bad by looking at the color of the serum. If it turns orange, brown or any other color than what it was, it’s probably expired.

  3. I actually did buy one about a month ago. When I bought it I had asked for a product to help with my dark circles. I guess the salesperson must have misunderstood what I was asking. So I used it that way- and it stung that area of my skin. This post is very informative. I will check the ingredients on the one I already have. – now that I finally have the right information.
