Welcome back to the last day of Fall Organization Week at One Good Thing By Jillee! I hope you have enjoyed all the helpful tips, tricks, and ideas we’ve shared with you this week. We started out in the Kitchen, moved to the Family Room, Bedroom, Bathroom, and left off in the Garage yesterday. Today we wrap up the week with the Backyard. Little did I know when I decided to include the backyard as one of the “rooms” in our organization week that most organization ideas for the backyard are centered around summer activities! I guess it makes sense since once colder weather sets in we don’t spend a whole lot of time back there anymore. Sooooo….today’s post is going to be more about ideas you might want to keep in mind for next spring.
But first, here are some fall maintenance ideas to get your yard ready for its’ long winter’s nap:
- Clean and store summer garden tools.
- Clear leaves from lawn, reseed patchy areas, and plant spring flowering bulbs.
- Fertilize the lawn to ensure healthy grass in the spring.
- Prepare your yard equipment for storage. This includes draining fuel from all gas-operated equipment such as lawn mowers and leaf blowers.
- Check to see that all of your snow removal equipment is up and running and easy to get to before the first snow fall.
- Drain garden hoses and store them inside. Also shut off outdoor water valves in cold weather. Any water left in exterior pipes and faucets can freeze and expand breaking the pipes.
- Inspect and fill bird feeders. Keep in mind that once you start feeding birds you should continue on a regular basis throughout the winter months.
- Clean, cover, and store outdoor furniture and barbecues in a protected area.
- Make sure all soil is emptied from pots and planters. Dirt left in clay pots can freeze and cause the pots to crack if left outside.
Covered Kiddie Parking Garage by MomEndeavors.com
I just love this idea! As cute as these kid-sized “vehicles” are, they can quickly become an eyesore when left strewn about the back (or front) yards.
Poolside Storage by HowToDecorate.com
Think outside the planter box! These versatile containers can be used for much more than just plants. Here they make great poolside towel storage.
Feet-Washing Station by Martha Stewart
This is a great idea even if you don’t live by the beach. As someone who tends to spend a lot of time barefoot in the backyard, I’m often wishing I had a way to clean my feet off before going back inside. This is such a simple, and attractive option.
Hand-Washing Station by Martha Stewart
Another simple but smart idea! Hang some soap-on-a-rope next to an outdoor faucet and turn it into a hand-washing station. Much better than bringing the dirt inside to wash off.
Outdoor Four-Panel Screen by Plow & Hearth
This is something I’m definitely going to be looking into either making or buying! Right now our big, ugly trash container is on the side of our house for everyone to see. I can’t believe I never thought of this!
DIY Garden Shed by A Cultivated Nest
This is one of the cutest DIY garden sheds I have ever seen! Made entirely from discarded doors and windows, it’s just the right size for a small to medium sized garden. Not to mention adorable! :-)
Metal Bucket Outdoor Coffee Table by A Place to Nest via Remodelaholic
Love this smart and attractive storage solution. A simple galvanized bucket becomes functional and beautiful backyard furniture.
Broken Rake Tool Holder by Art Stuff
A seemingly worthless broken rake becomes handy backyard gardening tool storage. Just big enough for the essentials. I love a great recycling project! :-)
DIY Outdoor Bench – in less than an hour by Kayla’s Basement
My hats off to Kayla for this genius use of cinderblocks to make a backyard bench! I love a project that I can figure out how to do without ever having to read one line of instructions!
DIY Barbecue Station by Decomanitas
Make sure to save any wooden crates you might come across this fall and winter so you can make this come spring! So simple!
Outdoor Toy Storage by MooshaGirl
A place for everything and everything in its’ place is obviously the concept behind this brilliantly simple organization system for backyard toys and tools. I just love the oversized chalkboard stickers too. No excuse for kids (that can read) not to put their toys away. :-)
Perfect Hose Holder by Red Farmhouse
Another great use for the ever-versatile galvanized bucket! I really hate having a garden hose just laying out on the ground, so I love this idea.
Hose and Sprinkler Holder by Martha Stewart
And if you’re looking for a hose and sprinkler holder, a smaller galvanized bucket turned on its’ side and attached to a wall is just the ticket!
Outdoor Storage Bench by Ana White
There’s no better way to add storage and seating for guests at the same time than a storage bench. There are lots of options you can purchase at any home improvement store, but this one by Ana White might make a nice winter project! :-)
How do YOU stay organized in the backyard?
