Summer is always the season of minor accidents and injuries in our house. The kids are playing outside, riding bikes, hiking, swimming, and pretty much every other activity that invites the possibility of getting scrapes, cuts, and bruises. (Not that they let those things stop them!) :-) But luckily, keeping a few basic supplies on hand can help you treat and heal almost any minor wound, so you and your family can get back to enjoying your summer!
10 Easy Home Remedies for Summer Wounds and Woes
1. Take ginger candies with you on road trips or vacations to settle upset tummies. Ginger helps reduce the inflammation which causes pain in the stomach and contains an antioxidant called Gingerol that helps eliminate a common cause of nausea. An especially helpful tip for those who suffer from motion sickness in cars or planes.
2. I ALWAYS have aloe vera gel on hand. Aloe contains compounds that reduce pain and inflammation. Not only is it great at soothing sunburns, but it’s also just a cool and refreshing way to moisturize your skin during those hot summer days. 3. Another moisturizing ingredient to have on hand is shea butter. I like to use it to make super-hydrating Body Butter, which I use after swimming or being out in the sun to get that much-needed moisture back in my skin. Nothing soothes and helps heal a sunburn faster than shea butter. Even the Mayo Clinic has been known to use it on burn victims.
4. Whip up a baking soda paste using baking soda and water to soothe the pain of bee or insect stings. Leave on the sting site for at least 15 minutes. Baking soda helps neutralize the acidic venom. Be sure to remove any stingers first!
5. Sweaty feet lead to stinky feet, which is almost impossible to avoid during the summertime. Eliminate odors and achieve smooth, soft feet by performing a Listerine Soak.
I know it sounds weird, but it works! Listerine is an antiseptic and an astringent so it reduces the amount you sweat after soaking in it. Listerine also contains ethanol, which kills bacteria, fungi, and germs that can cause athlete’s foot.
6. To help heal and soothe cuts and scrapes, add 1 cup of apple cider vinegar to a warm bath. The vinegar contains proteins, enzymes, and germ-killing bacteria that can help fight infection. And don’t worry about the smell – apple cider vinegar doesn’t smell nearly as strong when diluted in that much water.
7. Epsom salt is very helpful for healing and alleviating pain from bumps and bruises and muscle soreness! Try adding 1 cup of Epsom salts to a bowl of warm water. Soak a towel in the water, wring it out so there is no dripping, and place it on the sore area. Placing a hot water bottle on top will help the towels maintain their warmth longer and boost the magnesium content in the body which reduces swelling and draws blood flow to the area to stimulate healing.
8. A thin layer of honey can help heal shallow wounds. Honey aids the healing process in two ways: its acidity makes the wound less favorable for infection, and the honey draws fluid out of the wound, helping it heal faster.
Apply a layer using a clean craft stick or a Q-tip, then cover it with a bandage or gauze pad. Clean and reapply twice daily.
9. Apply witch hazel to bug bites using a cotton ball or pad to reduce itchiness and irritation! Witch hazel contains chemicals called tannins that help reduce swelling, help repair broken skin, and fight bacteria when applied directly to the skin.
