A Simple DIY Family Charging Station

A floral paper-covered tissue box serves as a simple charging station, neatly organizing cables through holes to power two smartphones and a laptop.

While Iโ€™m definitely not the most organized person youโ€™ll ever meetโ€ฆ.one thing that really drives me nutty is CORD CLUTTER. I detest all the tangled power cords that tend to accumulate due to my familyโ€™s affinity for gadgets.

When I came across this idea to make a โ€œcharging stationโ€ for electronic devices, I knew that this could cure my cord clutter woes. So I took an hour last week to put it together, and have been loving it ever since!

A teal flexible power strip, perfect as a simple charging station, lies on a marble surface next to a silver Alfani Platinum box.

First, youโ€™ll need a few supplies:

  • a shoebox (or similarly sized box with a lid)
  • aย power stripย or surge protector
  • decorations for yourย box, likeย wrapping paper,ย washi tape, etc. (optional, but strongly encouraged!)
A rectangular box wrapped in black paper with a white floral pattern and green tape along the top edge sits on a marble surface, cleverly repurposed as a simple charging station for the whole family.

I started by decorating an old shoebox with some adorable floral wrapping paper I found atย Paper Source. I used one 19.5โ€ณ x 27โ€ณ sheet for the bottom of the box and anotherย sheet for the top, then used washiย tape to cover the corner of the box where the lid bends.

A black and white floral-covered box with a green edge and a circular hole on one side sits on a white marble surface, making for a stylish DIY charging station.

Once my box was decorated to my liking, I cut a hole in the lower corner of one endย of the box, big enough for the cord of my power strip to go through.ย

A decorative, black-and-white floral shoebox with six evenly spaced round holes cut in the side sits on a marble surface, repurposed as a simple charging station for organizing your family's devices.

Next, I cut (5) 1-inch holes in the front of the shoebox for the power cords to pass through. (If you have more outlets on your power strip, make as many holes as youโ€™d like!)

A decorative box serves as a simple charging station, housing a turquoise power strip and several tangled charging cables and plugs on a marble surface.

All that was left to do was to plug in our chargers, feed the plugs through the front holes, and plug in the power strip to a nearby outlet.

Now the cord clutter is neatly contained, and I can stop fretting!

What is your clutter pet peeve?
