12 Uses For Shaving Cream That Seem Weird, But Totally Work

Use shaving cream to clean stainless steel, make your bathroom mirror fog-free, keep your eyeglasses from steaming up, and wash up on camping trips.

These Other Uses For Shaving Cream Might Surprise You

There are plenty of other uses for shaving cream than just shaving, including several shaving cream cleaning hacks! Who knew there was so much more you could do with shaving cream, especially outside the bathroom?

It was only fairly recently that my husband Dave started using a special shaving brush and soap to lather up before his morning shave. Before that, he’d been using shaving cream from a can for as long as I can remember, at least until he embraced my homemade shaving cream.

But since we still had some of his old shaving cream in the back of one of our bathroom drawers, I now have 12 good ways to use the rest of it! You know how I love a good home cleaning hack, and these uses for shaving cream are right up my alley!

Is Shaving Cream Good For Cleaning?

I’m glad you asked! Shaving cream contains soap and moisturizers that can gently clean a variety of materials, including wood, fabric, glass, and more. But cleaning with shaving cream isn’t all you can do with it either, so keep reading to find out what else it’s capable of!

12 Useful Shaving Cream Hacks

Put dish soap in the tub and use a broom to scrub it clean.
Cleaning your bathtub with a broom and dish soap is easy on your back and knees!

1. Put Shaving Cream On A Broom And Scrub Your Tub

Putting shaving cream on a broom might sound odd, but it’s actually a great way to clean your tub or shower! Just apply a generous amount of shaving cream to the bristles of a broom and use it to scrub tub and shower walls — you’ll be putting less pressure on your back, and your tub or shower will be gleaming in no time!

You can use shaving cream to spot clean a rug.

2. Remove Carpet Stains With Shaving Foam

Remove stains from your carpet with shaving cream by spraying the area with it, wiping with a damp sponge, and letting it dry. In the morning, vacuum up the dry mess and your carpet will look good as new! This is one of my favorite fast simple substitutions to make in a pinch.

You can clean stainless steel with shaving cream
Using shaving cream on your stainless steel appliances creates a whole new level of shine!

3. Use Shaving Cream To Clean Stainless Steel

Use shaving cream to clean stainless steel appliances and faucets by coating them with a thin layer of shaving cream and wiping the area dry. Then buff the surface with a clean microfiber cloth until it’s clean and shiny — it’s one of the best ways to clean stainless steel!

4. Keep Your Bathroom Mirror Fog-Free With Shaving Foam

Apply a thin layer of shaving cream to your bathroom mirror to keep the glass from fogging up. Just squirt a bit of shaving cream onto the mirror, wipe it off, and buff it until it’s clean and shiny.

No more wiping the mirror down after you get out of the shower in order to see yourself. (It works for glass shower doors and car windshields too!)

Use shaving cream on your hands after a manicure to clean off errant nail polish.
Rubbing shaving cream on your skin is a gentle, but effective, way to remove stubborn stains.

5. Clean Up Messy Hands With Shaving Cream

After your next at-home manicure, use shaving cream to remove any nail polish you may have gotten on your fingers without removing it from your nails. You can also get grease or paint off of your hands with shaving cream! (Need more cleaning power? Try a homemade hand scrub!)

Shaving cream can be used as a gentle cleaner for jewelry.

6. Use Shaving Cream To Clean Jewelry

The combination of soap, moisturizers, and other protective ingredients make shaving cream a surprisingly good cleaner for delicate items. You can use it to clean your jewelry and other delicate items by covering them in shaving cream, rubbing it in with your fingers, and then wiping it clean with a soft cloth.

Use shaving cream to spot clean your oven.

7. Spot Clean Your Oven With Shaving Cream

Need to clean a small spill or splatter inside your oven? Grab a scouring pad and get the shaving cream from the bathroom, and scrub a good amount of foam into the mess. Wipe it all up with a paper towel and you’re done! (Here’s how to clean your entire oven, not just spots.)

You can use shaving cream to silence a squeaky hinge!
WD40 step aside! Silencing squeaky door hinges is another great way to use shaving cream.

8. Use Shaving Cream To Silence Squeaky Hinges

Have a squeaky hinge somewhere that’s driving you up the wall? Shaving cream makes for a quick and easy fix! Spray a bit of the foam onto the hinge in question, open and shut the door a few times to work it into the hinge, then wipe up any excess foam.

Shaving cream will soothe a sunburn.

9. Soothe A Sunburn With Shaving Cream

Next time you have a sunburn, rub some shaving cream on the burn. As odd as it might sound, shaving cream has skin-soothing ingredients that will help ease the pain and swelling. (To help your skin heal after a sunburn, try this DIY After-Sun Lotion!)

Use shaving cream and food coloring to make shaving cream art foam!

10. Make Shaving Cream Foam Art

Make a fun and foamy finger paint by mixing shaving cream with a couple drops of food coloring. You and your little ones can sit outside and make colorful creations on sliding glass doors and windows. Afterward, cleanup will be as easy as grabbing the hose and spraying it down!

Use shaving cream on camping trips to clean your hands and a variety of other things.
Do yourself a favor and throw a can of shaving cream in your camping supplies box!

11. Take Shaving Cream Camping

Going camping? Pack a can of shaving cream to take with you! You can use shaving cream to clean sap off your hands, get gunk off of dishes, and even treat stains on your clothing in a pinch! Using shaving cream to clean things up is one of those things that make camping easier and more fun.

Put shaving cream on the lenses of your eyeglasses to prevent fogging.

12. Prevent Glasses From Fogging With Shaving Cream

You can use a bit of shaving cream to reduce the amount of condensation that builds up on your lenses. Use a soft lens cleaning cloth to apply a small amount of shaving cream to your glasses in circular motions, then wipe clean.

If you wear glasses, you know how frustrating it is when your lenses are constantly fogging up due to temperature changes! But it’s not just annoying — it can actually be dangerous too! That’s why this shaving cream hack is one of the best hacks for glasses wearers.

  2. Wow ! I’ll have to look and see if we still have a cans in our house. My dad switched to an electric razor several years ago. I definitely want to try it on a squeaky hinge. Also the master bathroom has that pee smell on the floor that is hard to get rid of.

  3. I tried the shaving cream on my stainless steel fridge and it left streaks and discoloration!

  4. Another nurse I worked with would use a large dollop of shaving cream on a paper towel as a room freshener.

  5. I wear glasses that always seem dirty/smudged. I have some type of special (expensive) coating on them. It seems that I’m always cleaning them. I have spray for them but it doesn’t cut it. I’ve tried soap & water, I always use the cloth meant for glasses (anything else will scratch them). I tried your shaving cream trick and I went all day without cleaning them! Barbasol is good – it’s also cheaper than using those “special” creams to soften our skin. I’ve stopped buying them since Barbasol does a better job of shaving my legs as well. I’ve always used cream on my legs after I shower so if Barbasol seems drying, those “special” creams for ladies are just as drying despite their claims.

  6. I also heard you can mix a small amount of all purpose cleaner with shaving cream and then apply to tile walls in the tub/shower since it will “stay put” this lets the cleaner “soak” a vertical surface

  7. WOW! Who knew! Thanks for the tip! Can’t wait to try this on stains. I wonder if it will work on upholstery too. My husband’s recliner is badly stained.

  8. Thank you for this article. I’d given up trying to remove spray marks from our stainless steel body dryer. I read this and thought nothing to lose here except a couple of dollars. Much to my amazement and joy it worked; no hard rubbing, just spray, spread and clean!

Do you know if one brand of shaving cream works better than another? I was a little concerned about additives such as aloe, moisturiser, etc.

    • I just used a basic shaving cream that I found at the dollar store :-)

    • I know it needs to be the plain, old, puffy shaving cream without any skin conditioners or anything that would be for “skincare”. I know I still had my dad’s shaving kit with a can of Barbasol in it from 2008 when he died and I dug it out. Lo and behold, except for not getting quite as big puff that dad used to get, it still worked just fine! No more fogged glasses at the grocery store due to my mask! Thanks, Jillee!! :-)

  9. Just love this post. I found shaving cream will remove the hairspray off tile flooring the bathroom. Soap and water will not remove the overspray that this stuff leaves behind. PLEASE be careful afterwards. The floor can be very slippery. I wash again with soap and water and dry very well. Test to make sure you will not slip.

Another use I saw today on TV. You can use it on the gunky stuff you child leaves behind in their car seat base. Shaving cream can remove the smell of diaper accidents in the car seat. Of course rinse well.

  10. When I taught school I would spray each child’s desk with shaving cream. They could finger paint pictures in the cream before taking a paper towel to clean the desk. The desks were clean and smooth and the classroom smelled great!

  11. Cleaning the toilet and surrounding floor with shaving cream takes the pee smell out of the bathroom. Helpful for families with young boys.

  12. Wow! I am definitely going to try. I just recently cleaned my oven with baking soda and elbow grease. It was very messy and took me two hours to make the oven look new again. I will remember the spot treatment for the oven in the future. So inexpensive as well. Thanks!

  13. I’ve been noticing it is probably one of the easier uses to clean random gunk, and your article is going to help me so much for the future. Bookmarked this page!

  15. Great tips! Thanks for sharing. Another tip…..if your at the beach and get tar on your feet. Rub shaving cream on the tar and rub with a towel. It will come off really easy. :-)

    • These are great surprising tips! I particularly like the one for cleaning the oven!

  16. I haven’t used it for any thing else but I will now. Thanks.

  17. We use shaving cream to help my son recall his spelling words. I spray some on the bathtub wall and he writes in the shaving cream to spell the word with his fingers. He thinks it’s super fun but he’s also preparing for that spelling test on Friday.

  18. This is not exactly a household tip, but….. If you’re into genealogy and visit older cemeteries, shaving cream is a must! Apply shaving cream to old tombstones and wipe off excess with a trowel or piece of cardboard. The engraving will stand out and be very east to read.

Please log in or create a free account to comment.
  19. I use WD-40 on my stainless steel fridge. It works well and does not attract finger prints. I just spray and wipe off with a microwave cloth.

I’ll have to give the shaving cream method a try, but it will be a month for more from now.

Please log in or create a free account to comment.
  20. When I was a teacher, we used shaving cream to clean the desks every few weeks. The kids loved to “finger paint”, the desks cleaned up beautifully, and the room smelled lovely!!!

  21. Oooh, I love the suggestion for the colored finger paint! This will come in handy when we have kiddos! We can get them to clean glass doors and they think they’re just playing–score!

      • But will their hands be stained from the food coloring??

      • It won’t as long as you use a little bit, and keep the colors light. You can use soap dye instead for a darker color that won’t stain. :-)

  22. Mix shaving cream with white glue to make a wonderful “snow” for Christmas projects. The mix will dry relatively firm.
I use about 3-4 tablespoons of glue and a good solid pump of shaving cream.

Please log in or create a free account to comment.
  23. Takes out blood and red wine! Dampen the area with cool water, spray on the shaving cream and let it sit. An apartment manager told me about using it for blood. Works on clothes, carpets, etc. I tried it on red wine and it worked great.

  24. If you’re into genealogy, put a blob of shaving cream on a flat surface like a putty scraper or notebook. Rub over old tombstones with the flat surface. The shaving cream will go into the indentions for letters and dates. No need to wipe — it will disappear. But if you’re photographing, take the picture quick because on hot days, it dries fast!

  25. Wow I had never heard about any of these things to do with shaving cream! Guess I’ll get a can as soon as I get to the store.

  26. I’ve heard about the windshield and mirror trick before. We’ve also done the food coloring with the shaving cream. It works. It’s great for keeping children entertained.

  27. I knew about the mirrors and car windshields, but all your other tips were outstanding as usual.
