The Simple DIY For Better Sleep Is A Nightstand Necessity

Slumber Essential Oil Blend Sleep Sticks For A Good Night’s Sleep

I’m always looking for ways to get a better night’s sleep, and Slumber Blend has been certainly been a big help in that regard. I have, in the past, used it to make my own sleep salve, but I was looking for a format that would be less disruptive to my early-to-bed, early-to-rise husband.

I’ve always been more of a night owl, so when I would climb in bed at night (or the wee hours of the morning), I would have to find the jar of salve, take the lid off, put it on, then replace the lid and put the jar back, which was a bit noisy and required turning the light on so I could see what I was doing. He didn’t complain about it, but I woke him up more than once (despite my best efforts).

My grandpuppy, Duncan, definitely approves of my sleep sticks!

As I considered how I might solve this dilemma, I remembered the post I wrote years ago about making “winter cheeks sticks“, and realized I had my solution right there! All I had to do was use Slumber blend in place of lavender oil, and I’d be able to make my own homemade sleep sticks that would be quick and easy to apply!

Here’s how to make them.

DIY Slumber Sticks: How To Make Your Own Sleep Sticks

DIY Sleep Sticks - fractionated coconut oil, Slumber Essential Oil Blend, beeswax pastilles, coconut oil, and empty lip balm tubes

You’ll need:

DIY Sleep Sticks - woman's hand measuring beeswax pastilles into a jar with the other ingredients; woman stirring the ingredients in the jar which is in a pot of simmering water

Directions:

In the top of a double boiler, or in a glass or metal bowl suspended over a pot of simmering water, combine the coconut oil, liquid carrier oil, and beeswax. Stir occasionally until melted and combined, then remove from heat.

Add 35 drops of Slumber to the melted oil mixture and stir.

Pour the oil mixture into a measuring cup with a pour spot, then use it to carefully fill your empty lip balm tubes. Allow the oil mixture to solidify completely before using.

This recipe will fill about 20-25 small lip balm tubes. If you have any empty tubes left over afterward, you can use them to make homemade lip balm or stain treatment sticks! (Or, for a larger Slumber stick that covers more surface area, you could use an empty deodorant container rather than a lip balm tube.)

Once you have made your sticks, using them is easy — simply swipe a stick over the bottoms of your feet once you’ve climbed into bed, or while enjoying a cup of sleepy time tea. You’ll be off to sleep in no time!

  1. Have only used peppermint but the Dream Stick would be welcomed by the whole family. It sounds great. Wish I knew more about essential oils and which ones really work.

  2. I would love to start using essential oils. I have been reading your blog for a few months and have pinned your recipes for scrubs, laundry and such. Just have not purchased the oils yet.

  3. As the caretaker of the family, oils are all about keeping the well being of my family up :) I love protective and respiratory blends. They are essential this time of year My husband also works outdoors and it has been freezing here, so I’ve tried the latest treatment of warming up hands that you suggested minus the salve (still have yet to get all the supplies to make) and added black pepper oil with a carrier to his hands. Works like a charm :)

    Thanks for your blog!

  5. Wow! I use E.O’s so much nowadays that it is hard to pick. But it is December and I live in the Midwest in the heart of cold & flu territory. I’ve been diffusing my homemade blend of “Thieves” at least 3x a week and we have not gotten sick one single day yet this winter. So, that has got to be my #1 favorite way to use EO’s so far. But I use them in every way I possibly can.

  6. I have a few of the basic EO and I have mainly been using them for cleaning. I did make my own deodarent but have to confuse I did not like the smell as much as my usual Tom’s of Maine Beautiful Earth. If I could figure out that scent I would be in heaven.

  7. I have been a fan of your blog for a long time and have learned SO many wonderful ways to avoid the store-bought (and very expensive) household and skin-care products.

HOWEVER, I am becoming more and more disappointed that you are now promoting the EO “blends” instead of sharing the recipes for us to make our own. If I’m not mistaken, think “Jeddy’s Blend” was the first item for which you removed the formula, replacing it with links to your sponsor. (I wish I had saved it when I had the chance) Now it seems more and more that you have ‘gone commercial’ and sold out to the sponsored products.

This seems completely contradictory to the main focus of your website – giving us lower cost ways to make our own.

  8. Hmm… hard to pick an absolute favorite use of oils. Of course, using them for healing is what attracted me initially. I’d have to say I love using them to get rid of odors and in homemade beauty products!

  9. I love using essential oils in the products I make for myself. My favorite scented oil is now a tie between vanilla and jasmine, but I like tea tree oil as well!

  15. I like to use essential oils in grape seed as a perfume. I have a special mixture of things I love which also have special meanings to me like strength and self love. It is like putting on armor! I also put a small dab of vetiver on my wrists to sniff throughout the day to stay grounded. Vetiver smells like earth to me. I love essential oils!

  16. I am somewhat new to using oils. I got stung by a wasp. I put Basil oil on it, and the swelling and burning stopped right away. I like using oils for anything that can help the body. I have not used them in cooking. I have put wild orange and lemon into drinks.
I am always looking to try new and natural things.

  18. I have never used essential oils but will be excited to get started if I win. The closest thing I have tried was a pre-made bottle of lavender bedtime pillow spray, which I absolutely loved.
